Hard drive getting full

Post by rich1241 »

Hi,

Just after a bit of advice as want to buy quite a few things in the current sale. I have 2 drives on my computer C which is an SSD but only has about 10gb left - train sim is installed here. And a D normal hard drive of 1tb.

How easy it is to move my train sim installation to the other drive or is there a way to keep the game installed on the SSD for good performance, but the routes etc on D?

Or if there is some other option I'm missing maybe?

Thanks for any help in advance,
Rich

Firstly setup a new games folder on another driver.

Add this folder to Steam as an additional Steamapps folder

Close steam completely then....

Move your railworks folder to another drive into the additional Steamapps folder

Open Steam and "Uninstall" Traimsim.

Reinstall but point to your additional Steamapps folder on the other drive.

It should just verify the installation which reinstalling/downloading it all again.

I think I got those steps in the right order :)

Hi Woodee

I've got the same issue have to do the same at some point over the next couple of weeks. I've got a lot of third party stuff. I've taken a look through previous topics on these forums and it appears that it's also a good idea to take a separate copy of the Assets and Content folders and any third party folders (JT have a separate folder for their manuals for example) and put them in a safe place. The Steam validation will reset all your stuff back to their pristine state. Once that is complete, then copy back those saved folders to your new Steam installation, remembering to let it overwrite everything. It could take a while as there will be a lot of files.

The only thing left to do then is to repoint all your installation entries in the Control Panel to their new location, but that's another story.

Is that correct?

Cheers

I'm unsure about third party addons as I don't have any.... I just know about the "normal" move procedure, sorry :)

Basically, yes.

However, if you move your existing installation none of the 3rd party files should be touched by the verification unless they're edits to RSC/DTG/Kuju files---in other words Steam acquired files changed by 3rd party additions/enhancements will be reverted back to a default state, but 'stand alone' 3rd party files aren't seen as a *problem* by Steam so it shouldn't touch them. Still make that backup though!!--there's more risk of a dropped connection screwing things up than Steam removing stuff it shouldn't.
You should only need to copy back any edited *official* files so it won't take as long as you've been thinking.

Thanks Gary.

When copying them back from the backup, how do I recognise which ones do need to be copied back?

Good question....gimme a week and I'll come up with a good answer

Having two instances of Windows Explorer open will allow you to compare the folders in each pair of Assets and Contents folders---any that aren't in the new installation can be simply copied over in their entirety.
If you've installed any AP soundpacks (the most usual reason why you'd need default files backed up) you may need to determine if any of those stock items had any other *official* upgrades applied--revised physics for example--which may mean you'd need to tread carefully before overwriting any files. Most haven't however, so it's very much a case of just copying the backed up folders back in; there's not much need to get down to file level as the time spent deciding on which files to restore would probably be longer than the time it takes to paste everything back, unless of course you know exactly which files are involved.

Golden Rule---if in doubt, don't. Seek advice first.

There are plenty in here who'd be able to advise on an asset by asset basis, so just delaying the process by a short while and getting it right is much better than messing things up. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK!!! :)

Thanks again, Gary.

As you say, it could take an age to work out which ones to change and which ones not to. Just one thought - would it be safe to say that if I copied by existing folders to a safe place, made the migration and then copied back in one sitting, then I should be safe? That way I'd be simply replacing everything that was there before the migration and only undoing the set-it-back-to-default-state process that the Steam verification will do.
