The article clearly states twice that the upgrade is not free as usual. A direct quote from the article 'You'll need to buy TS2016 to get access to all of this however' implies that we will have to buy TS2016 to get at least some of the new features. '7 - TS2016 WILL BE A FREE UPGRADE AS USUAL' is one of the 10 myths, in this context as with the other 9 points I'm taking myth to mean untrue, a falsehood, etc., so that is implying TS2016 is not a free upgrade as usual.
But that quote highlights my point, it is the free upgrade as usual, but people didn't read the article and are assuming that in order to get TS2016, you will have to pay for it. However as it has been highlighted before, this year's edition will be the same as it has always been, a free core update for existing owners and any new "exclusive" content (like included DLC) will require a purchase. The respondents to the article however decided to not read it properly and some are now complaining that they are going to be forced to buy everything all over again, along with having to do so next time round with the UE4 version...
cilldroichid wrote:I don't see any poster in this tread as being offended
I said the article respondents were offended, not anyone in this thread. People on here tend to be more level-headed.

It does not bother me that we will have to buy the full TS2016 game, my only concern (like I mentioned on the previous page,sort-of) is: will it install, overwriting where necessary any files on TS2015 and not as a separate entity.

Why would they change the format of how it installs for the first time in years ? TS2015 will become TS2016 and I'd you re-purchase then you'll get routes/trains with some extra bells and whistles. Same as it ever was.

Not that hard to visualize, although the way DTG words their product, I wouldn't be surprised if people get it confused.

It'll be the same process as 14 => 15, except the new special feature will be exclusive this time instead of like it was last time. If I remember correctly, the Academy Update was included for everyone who previously had 14, but this time, the new feature they add won't automatically be included. That's all.

Always baffled what DTG are thinking in keep responding to these issues, they seem to muddy quite unmuddy waters every time they do so. TBF Its not helped by there own PR/Marketing which seems to want to do two things at once - One stress that yes everyone will get a free core update and year change and that will add benefits to the core- whilst (two) trying to explain that its new routes that will make use of those benefits and those are DLC (It gets muddied more because its often cheaper to simply rebuy the whole game as it may be cheaper).

The problem is they seem to say something thats quite plain and easy to understand but then spend weeks over explaining it to the headscratchers to the point it becomes fog

pjt1974 wrote: Considering we get the Core upgrade for free as usual, it would be nice though if they offered existing customers a cheaper upgrade option that included all the 'Extreme' extras rather than having to buy the sim again as in previous years.
I've only bought Railworks once and have got all the previous upgrades for free. Obviously I've purchased the DLC's that made use of some of the new features in each upgrade but I've never bought the base game again. I'm thinking that is going to be case this year but it was not the case previously.
To be honest, I don't know why you can think I'm misinterpreting the article.

The core update is free - check
The extra content which comes with TS2016 isn't free - check
To get the extra content, you have to buy the full game again - check
The full full game includes the new core content which we will have - check

All I'm saying is that as we'd already have half of TS2016 already installed on our computers, it'd be nice if we were offered a deal to buy the TS2016 'Extreme' extra's at a lower price than buying the whole game again. I know it's not going to happen but I'm just saying it'd be nice to think it would.
For disclosure, I am affiliated with a third party developer however, I do not know anything about any future releases unless I'm working on them and even then, I'd be breaking years worth of built up trust to say anything about it ;-)

And that is what is different from previous upgrades, is it not?

Last post in this thread because I don't want to labour the point but that is not what happened 'last year. And the year before that... And the year before that.........'

I've only bought the base game once when it was RailWorks 2 and i have not bought it since and yet the game I'm playing now is called TS2015. Yes I've spent a lot, in fact what must be in the four figures, on DLC's from all sources and I've no objection to paying for an upgrade.

Taking what you say at face value, yes, you have TS2015 but no, you don't have the additional content (routes and rolling stock) that's been introduced with each annual update because you elected not to purchase it.

Yes it is... you didn't get the routes or stock bundled with the full retail version of TS2015 when it replaced TS2014, you had to purchase those separately.

I think there in highlights the problem and the confusion Donal.

Most confusion is caused by many not understanding the difference between core upgrade and new game as sold on Steam.

Since Railworks became Train Simulator, they have always seemed to include 'extras' for new buyers of the game as well as a basic upgrade of the core software for existing users. Those 'extras' for the new buyers of the game were generally new DLC which eventually ended up as stand alone DLC. I myself generally wait till a good sale on the base game and get all the new 'extras' in one go. That's why I've got American routes I'll never use.

TS2016 doesn't look like it'll be any different. The basic core software will be upgraded for everyone who allows it to. The 'extras' for the new buyers of the game will probably be new DLC that'll show the new core software off to the 'extreme'. That new DLC will probably end up as stand alone DLC eventually, just like they did before.

It's been mentioned before, certain departments at DTG seem to be working against each other in trying to make this point clear when in fact they are making a Bovril out of it that you cannot see through.

Simple as
TS2016 is not Unreal Engine
Existing customer will receive the core TS2016 software for free
If you want the extra DLC that comes with TS2016 you will have to buy the new game

That's all there is to it, nice concise summary
