Problem with .ap files

Post by TheTazman »

I have made a few purchases recently and I find that once the main ap files download steam does not seem to install them for me. Instead it's leaving me to manually extract the files by going into windows explorer and extracting everything using 7-zip. Last night I purchased wearvale and could not locate the route in the routes list until I extracted the file once that was done it appeared. I also seem to have issues with its scenarios in that they list under the route and load ok but things like darlington station are not showing . I can see people but no station or bridges etc yes details set to max and cleared the cache as required . So at the end of the day should I be the one doing the installation or should steam be extracting the files for me ? Also if any one can tell me as to how to make darlington station appear and any other assets I would be grateful .

Problem with .ap files

Post by FoityBill »

You don't need to do anything with the AP files. The game will read these, people do unpack them if they want to modify files, etc but if all you want to do is drive trains, then leave the AP files alone. If you do unpack them, it's better to use RWTools as this will unpack them in the correct directories and mark them as read/write.

So why does the route not show until I have extracted them ? Is there a reason for that ? I will check using r w tools when I get on my comp.

The game reads the contents of .ap archives seamlessly, RW Tools doesn't

If you have a permissions conflict or mis-match in your RailWorks folder this could conceivably *hide* new goodies, so it'd be worthwhile using the 'Make all Railworks files read/write' routine in RW Tools to be sure. Extracting with 7-zip doesn't make the folders/files read/write, so RW Tools can't do anything with them which is another reason to use RW Tools to do the extracting if you need to copy a .GeoPcDx file for example.

The usual reason is lack of PC resources, so what are your specs?
Do you have all 5 advanced graphics options set high/max?

Right so here goes up date time.

My Video Card is a Nvidia GTX 760... lets get that one out of the way first. Graphics are pretty much set to max barring the shadows which are about set to 50%.

I reverted back to the way Steam downloaded the Wearvale route by just having the WearValleyRailwayAssets.ap in the folder. I also loaded RW Tools and set all files/folders to be read / write.

When TS loads this is what I see like a 3d model landscape.

If however, I do actually extract the contents of the .ap file and reload TS then I get this... assets are showing but main objects like darlington station are missing:

What I would do is deselect the route from the DLC list on the steam UI, which will remove it completely from your system, then reselect it and allow steam to redownload the route. It is possible that your .ap file is corrupt or incomplete somehow, so doing a re-download may sort this out. Hope it helps to get you going!

It still is showing a blank terrain when it loads the first of the class 25 scenarios.

Should I maybe consider backing up the assets and contents folders and redownload the main TS folders a-fresh?

There are 2 parts to every route; the assets used and the route itself. You should be looking at a total size of around 1.5GB so you may still have chunks missing. Check for the route itself at ..\Content\Routes\00000112-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 (.ap file of 354,534KB) and the assets at ..\Assets\RSderek\WearValleyRailway (.ap file of 1,156,074KB)

Certainly not yet...if you're having bother with a 1.5GB transfer it's unlikely to work well with whatever GB you have in DLC on top of the 8GB or so for the base game.
You should have those folders backed up anyway  but if you do decide to drag it down again don't delete your existing copy, just install a fresh copy of Steam/TS in a different location---have you it installed in the default of C:\Program Files (x86) ?

I have re-downloaded the route from steam and have just the .ap files in the folders

so that no files are extracted and should be as they are once downloaded.

Files and folders are:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks\Assets\RSderek\WearValleyRailway WearValleyRailwayAssets.ap (1.10 GB (1,183,819,067 bytes))

and

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks\Content\Routes\00000112-0000-0000-0000-000000000000

containing 2 files MainContent.ap at 346 MB (363,042,087 bytes) and WearValleyRailwayClass105Pack01Scenarios.ap 3.75 MB (3,939,323 bytes)

I have then loaded TS and the route does not appear in the Career Menu.. where it was previously. I can see its icon in QUick Drive but It says it has 0 scenarios. I can also see a bit of blurb on the route in the text window but that's about all.

I also tried to download a couple of scenarios from Workshop but that's had no effect either.

I then made sure that all files where read/write using RW Tools and then loaded TS.

I suspect that you need to clear the blueprint cache. It certainly wouldn't do any harm.
