Anyone able to tell me for sure ?

Post by ka959 »

Now, I've had TS 2015 for as long as I have, so far, I've liked it pretty much, but there's always that slight niggling doubt in my head, somewhere... thinking about TS2014, and how it was a little bit easier, somehow or other, in some ways. If I wished to change back to TS2014, say, is it worth it NOW, so long after TS2015 has been out ? What is the general consensus ? And what, if you DON'T have a backup ? Would it be too much of a hassle, or not ? I've since put the changes at the back of my mind, and have almost forgotten what they are, so again, is it genuinely worth the trouble ? And would you need to buy another copy of TS2014, first ? Or is it possible to get another copy from elsewhere ? Questions, questions, questions !

Regards...

Don't bother 2016 will be along in September and if you could install 2014 Steam will update it. If you have a backup of your 2014 you could go back to that as long as you remain offline

I'll echo what Frank wrote----not worth the hassle, and bear in mind Jim your concentration issues, as it would involve a fair bit of tinkering to keep it 'safe' from a Steam update if you had a backup of TS2014.

Hi Jim,
I can understand why you feel that way about TS 2014 because I still have 2014 installed as well 2015 so I can get the best of both installations. Now I don't want to open a can of worms but on MY SETUP some routes do run better on 2014, that doesn't mean that I am disappointed with 2015 its just that I now have a choice which installation to use.
Being a cautions sort of chap I always backup all my software just in case I want to go back to my original copy, especially drivers, or as my gran always said, don't throw your winter coat away just because its summer.
Keeping my TS 2014 offline is easy because both TS 2014 and TS 2015 each have their own individual Steam folder so I stay offline with 2014 and go online with 2015.

If you didn't make a backup of your TS 2014 install I can't see how you can go back but some more experienced members may be able to give you better advice than me.

Regards,
Pete.

...............till you forget :(

I advocate being ultra-cautious; also set up a couple of firewall rules to deny both Steam.exe and Railworks.exe in the 'quarantined' copy internet access.

It could be possible to install TS2014 from disc, I can't remember the procedure but there is an option somewhere (maybe not an official one) to install using the content on the disc rather than on the Steam servers, backup that copy before going online to authorise the install and link it to your Steam account. Once Steam has updated it, copying the backed up TS2014 back into the Steam folders might just work---all theory though.

Haven't forgot yet Gary, Also Steam 2014 and Steam2015 have each got their own desktop icon.

Neither have I Peter, but I've messed many things up before now by not being totally on the ball---if it's possible for something to go awry, it will.... eventually.

With this in mind, and knowing that Jim does have problems remembering things it would certainly be more prudent to eliminate, as much as possible, any potential for a mishap.

Like I said, I don't have a backup copy of TS2014. It seems, from the feedback, that I'll probly find it too much trouble, to put 2014 back on my system. someone said that it's not that long before TS2016 makes an apparancd on the skyline, and it'll be a fair bit of work when it's almost time for the newest version to make it's appearance, and I'll get the work overwrtten. So it's just NOT worth all the hassle, I guess. Full stop !

Thanks guys, I guess you saved me a fair bit of work ! I suppose the eal reason, is because I thought the work might keep me thinking more, and therefore keep my brain a little more active ! Best I save that work for when TS2016 arrives, and save this r when I REALLY need it. For whatever changes are made to 2016 - I'll need to make myself well aware of them, whatever they are, and that's a lot of brain power wasted, I suppose. I recall, EVERY new version of TS has a bit of new stuff to digest. Thanks for taking that trouble. It's appreciated. Really is !

Regards...

Hi again Jim,
I think you have made the right decision to stay with 2015 under the circumstances, but just one more bit of advice, why don't you buy yourself a external hard drive and make a copy of all your Steam folder which will include TS 2015, then when TS 2016 arrives if you don't like it you can go back to TS 2015.
These drives are not that expensive, just give it some thought Jim or you may be asking the same question later on this year when TS 2016 is released.
In the mean time Jim just enjoy TS 2015 which is still a good sim.

Take care,
Pete.

Very sound advice it is too; not only for Jim but for anybody else who wants to take a 'belt and braces' attitude towards safeguarding their copies of the game. Of course you could use another internal drive, or another connected PC if you have either of those available.
