And of course all those YouTube videos have been in an uncompressed format, totally unaffected by any lag imposed by your internet connection, and your monitor is tuned to have the most realistic colour spectrum....?

You've now gone from a "TS is rubbish" stance to one more along the lines of "here's a list of games I think are rubbish" which dilutes your TS focused complaint considerably. Nobody is denying that there are games on the market with vastly superior graphics to TS, just as there are graphics editing programs with more features than some others or AV programs with *better* detection rates than others. There are many (probable/plausible) reasons for this; some as outlined by Pete earlier in this thread.

If you don't use TS, apart from a fleeting glance without *properly* working through some fine tuning, how can you expect users of the game to give your thoughts credence?
If the answer is so obvious how come it's needing time to write it...surely something that's so simple more or less writes itself?

Whilst you have every right not to use whatever programs you don't like the look of, and the right to express your views you're in no position really to back up your argument--remember, If you aren't part of the solution you must be part of the problem (unless you're a chemist)

That must have been costly just to try it out

It was costly, I bought the railworks version, some years back. Thought I'd try the free upgrade the other day. It hasn't improved in any worthwhile way though, especially considering what's out there now.

No gptech, it's a new one, not sure what it is but its a very good one. Some of the games on it look really good.

I'm not trying to be awkward, it comes naturally :) , but if you don't know what it is how do you know how good it is?

Guys I'd give it up and move on - don't feed the troll and all that.

Clearly he can't see the issue of a 100 mile route vs a 1km square "box". I keep seeing comparisons to games with no inbuilt editor and very limited areas to explore. This is like complaining that a people carrier isn't as fast as a Ferrari. Of course it's not.. but try taking you and 6 mates for a trip out in an Enzo! Not to mention comparative costs, which in this case equates to the $100M+, 1000 employee AAA games vs DTG and their current situation of trying to shine a graphics engine that was written about 10 years ago.
Presumably he posts on all games websites that are 8 years old to tell them that they don't look like a pre-rendered video for a game that's not even out yet

Oh, if only games with poor graphics sold at all. If only Minecraft had sold more than 100 copies, what a huge flop that game is.

I lost interest in talking to people obsessed with graphics a long time ago. I've played games with shocking graphics that were tons of fun (MInecraft, FTL, Mount & Blade, Age of Empires II - which I just bought again in the Steam sale). And I've played games with amazing graphics - that bored me to tears and made me think that they should have taken some of that gfx money and put it into some flippin' gameplay!
Maybe it's because I started gaming at a time when ALL games looked awful.. because that's all that a Dragon 32/Vic 20 could manage.

As an aside I tried to think of a game with the visual scope of TS, that came out around 2006/7. The closest I could think of was the original Arma.

Ignoring the fact that the character models look a bit better - which I would expect as they are a significant part of gameplay, whereas in a train sim they are really just moving scenery - that's pretty on par with TS. In fact I'd say that I've seen TS shots that look a lot better.

So there you are OP, you can now pop off and start berating another 8 year old game's forum that they don't look as good as a game that's not out yet.
Everyone else, don't be feeding them trolls now

Dang ... Heavy troll season we are having. Great answer Karma....
Now I started with the best graphics ever on a game - PONG - what a blast that game was - spent hours playing that thing.

All PONG needed was an Armstrong Powerhouse sound pack to make it really good..........

I actually did

Being serious for a moment.. dangerous I know!
Carrying on with my Arma theme of viewing distance/area of travel, maybe the most recent version, Arma 3, is a more useful comparison point for the next gen version of TS when it arrives? I'll be pretty happy if it looks like that.

Yes, that does look rather nice and the PC specs needed aren't out of this world:

Minimum:
OS: Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7 SP1
Processor: Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz or AMD Dual-Core Athlon 2.5 GHz
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT or AMD Radeon HD 3830 or Intel HD Graphics 4000 with 512 MB VRAM
DirectX®: 10
Hard Drive: 15 GB free space
Sound: DirectX®-compatible

Recommended:
OS: Windows 7/ 8 (64bit)
Processor: Intel Core i5-2300 or AMD Phenom II X4 940 or better
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 or AMD Radeon HD 7750 with 1 GB VRAM or better
DirectX®: 11
Hard Drive: 25 GB free space (SSD/Hybrid HDD/SSHD storage)
Sound: DirectX®-compatible

We live in hope!

My first train-simming was on the Spectrum; Ashley Greenow's(?sp) Merry-Go-Round and Flying Scotsman I think.

MGR did at least have some graphics during the wagon loading phase...!
