If you mean 'own Windows 7 Home Basic - get a basic Windows 10' type of like for like?

I got the windows 10 icon a couple of days ago,but still can't make up my mind whether to upgrade to windows 10 or stick with windows 7 which I'm used to.

There's no rush Mike, the free upgrade lasts for 12 months from release and having the wee notification in your status bar isn't the only way to get it--all that really does is reserve your place in the queue at launch.

So the answer is yes.

Although there are 7 versions in total, the structure of different non-VLK PC versions is 'coarser' for 10 than 7 - two iterations instead of five; hence users of the three 'lower end' versions of 7 will migrate to the 'Home' version of 10, and the users of 7 Professional and Ultimate get the 'Pro' version of 10; The differences between Home and Pro seem to be mainly to do with encryption although one thing make me happy that I have 7 Ultimate is that on Pro you have the ability to control Windows Updates which is not the case with Home.

On the downside for me is a worry insofar as we also have a netbook that currently runs 7 Home Premium, which will migrate to 10 Home (unless I spend whatever MS demand to upgrade; $99 USD so probably £99 GBP....) I have had issues in the past where an update has 'broken' a programme and have been able to uninstall the offending update and 'hide' it - I'm not sure if that will be completely possible in 10 Pro....

In any case, with particular regard to the netbook I'll just have to hope that they test the updates before imposing them on users, rather than releasing and only afterwards issuing a patch to mend what the update broke!

The upgrade gives you a Win10 licence of the same scope as your existing Win 8 one, and although details are yet to be released the ability to create your own installation disc from a .iso image will be available.
Once you have the licence your copy of Win 10 is yours, no time limit on that---the 12 months period to qualify for the free upgrade is just that: you have 12 months in which to qualify, and register the licence, not actually install it.

As for the people who say they are not going to get it until the bugs are ironed out, MS say they have had 10 million people testing it out. I have reserved my copy of it.

Therre's a history of every other version of Windows being duffel, see the list above, BUT much of that is due to the average user not being comfortable with new routines introduced in those versions---UAC with Vista for example.
By the time the next version is released minor bugs/glitches with those routines have been ironed out and how to properly use them well documented (though there is also a load of bull written too---UAC serving as an example again)
How we interact with the software, how well we understand the software and how well the software writers understand the average guy determines how well a product is received; unfortunately the average guy is too lazy to investigate how to use new routines properly, perhaps due to the push to 'dumb down' so much of the basics of using a computer. This leads to frustration and a bush fire of angry forum posts, quite a few from folk who haven't the software but just like to join in.
A bit like any game related forum.

But yes, you're right---for longer than I'd like to remember I've been battling against the "oh, that involves thinking, but the guy in the shop said the computer did everything" mind set.

Of course it's not all easy, nigh on impossible in fact if you attempt to take it all in at once, but one bit at a time is a great strategy.
