Well they have to keep the core the same for everyone, otherwise it's support chaos - but potentially they could add something new and "Extreme" that can only be activated with an additional purchase?
I'm totally guessing here, but based on their previous activity and their clear goal of a unified platform for everyone I am 99.9% sure that the core updates will be free as always - the "extras" I would think will be optional in exchange for some cash.

Can you name a cheap one?
I go fishing, over the years I've seen cane rods superseded by glass fibre, in turn 'junked' for carbon fibre versions. I can still use those old items though
I've broken items of tackle, they can't be replaced by a verify and/or re-download and have to be purchased anew, so is this really such an expensive hobby? Don't forget that nobody has ever forced you to buy a particular item.

I'm hoping that DTG and other content creators will be able to reauthor TS15 assets and release them for TS:UE, as otherwise it will be years before the new sim has enough content to make me give up on the old one. And I'm hoping I won't be asked to pay full price for such re-releases, as otherwise it will be years before I own enough TS:UE content to persuade me to give up on the old one. This will be a key issue for DTG to clarify.
People moan about all the money they have invested in TS and won't go to the TS/Unreal when ever it comes out. I went through 5 versions of MS Flight Simulator and invested lots of money in each version and had to start again with the next version. If you are really a keen Train Driver when the Unreal version comes out you well be rushing to buy it. I know I well be. I have a cupboard full of old PC games starting from Windows 95 thousands of $ invested which are probably worthless now.

Just think how cheap our hobby would have been if Microsoft had stopped at Windows 95---then there'd be no new *features* meaning software had to be updated to keep parity.......
Right...I'm off to play with my clockwork train set, none of that new fangled electrikery stuff here, it's too expensive .....
I have a similar experience with Flight Sims. I had invested lots in FS2004 with a wide variety of payware DLC's, and was determined to remain with FS2004 when FSX was released. Over the following years I maintained my activity level with it, whilst slowly , gradually, picking up some FSX stuff. Even today, I still run my FS2004 stuff regularly (and enjoy it), but I now spend much more time (and $'s) with FSX, especially now I have a PC capable of running it more smoothly.
I'm sure I'll be the same with TS2015 / 16, even after the new TS/Unreal is released. I'll just look at it as another extension of my Simming hobby.
I too remember the release of FSX and I remember the arguments and haters because much stuff did not migrate to the new sim. Many people stuck with the old sim in part due to the amount of addons they had and in part, FSX needed a decent PC. The big thing that moved people over though to FSX, many companies released dual versions of products for both sims and also patches so older items could also move over. So in effect I was using the older sim, but I was still getting items for the newer when they worked on both. Eventually with a new PC I used the old sim less and less. It takes a while for a new sim to mature, its not going to have all your favourite routes/trains on day one. I think it will be along transition for some but it will happen eventually
I know the thread has moved on a little since the original post but I agree with Growler and DTG haven't helped much to avoid confusion.
During this whole process and official announcements about 2016 and the Unreal Engine, I only remember once, during the original euphoria about TS going to Unreal Engine, that DTG actually stated that it's unlikely that 2016 would be the new engine. Never have they actually come out in plain English, or whatever language you use, and said TS2016 will not be Unreal Engine. They seem to have danced around the subject in fancy speak. If I hadn't gotten to know the DTG/RSC closed shop so well over the years, I would be inclined to think DTG were trying to hide something if I'm honest.
Why couldn't they have just done what Pete(Karma 99) did in the second post of this thread? Why are they so coy about stating so people understand what is actually happening? I'm sorry DTG but to the uninitiated, it would seem you are trying to hide something
No wonder the original poster, amongst others, has got the wrong end of the stick.
Reminds me of a Monty Python sketch( edited for the occasion) "(Jackson) Why do you want to join Dovetail Games? (Candidate) I like trains (Jackson) Why do you want to join Dovetail Games? (Candidate) I like fishing (Jackson) Why do you want to join Dovetail Games? (Candidate) I can make 3D models (Jackson) Why do you want to join Dovetail Games? (Candidate) I can build glorious scenery and landscapes (Jackson) But why do you want to join Dovetail Games? (Candidate) errrrrrrrr!!!!!! (Jackson) Can you keep a secret? (Candidate) Errrr..... yes!!!! (Jackson) Good, well you're in then, welcome to the team"
For disclosure, I am affiliated with a third party developer however, I do not know anything about any future releases unless I'm working on them and even then, I'd be breaking years worth of built up trust to say anything about it
Just read that article and it seems pretty clear to me that TS2016 is not using UE! Not sure about these extreme challenges though? But better rain and even sparks appeals.

I completely agree with you Martin, but to some, you can see how it can be taken the wrong way after all the speculation and wild rumours that has gone on since Unreal Engine was announced. DTG read many of the forums and posts, so a simple "TS2016 is NOT Unreal Engine" would quash the speculation once and for all, even just to save them having to constantly answer questions about it themselves.

Yes it was just completely rumours that the Unreal engine version would be out this year. Everyone was just making assumptions that it was, myself included.
