Which Class 40? Just Trains or AP ?
I've been thinking about buying a Class 40.
The DT one from Just Trains seems to have plenty of liveries and scenarios. The Armstrong Powerhouse model looks superb with plenty liveries .
Has anyone got both ? If so which is best taking into account the price difference, JT £11.99 ( less points and with the prospect of a sale sometime) or the AP one £19.99 ( not usually any sales).
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hmmm, where did you hear that, AP have as many Sales as the other 3rd party vendors, Easter, Summer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.Springer6 wrote: the AP one £19.99 ( not usually any sales).
The Railright Class 40 cannot be touched as regards detailing, scripting, texturing, cab funtionality, it can only be driven in expert mode as it is not a locomotive to be messed with.

I have both - AP wins hands down even though I did buy the AP sound pack for the JT version. The AP version has a better version of the sounds built in! It is a lot harder to drive properly though so use the JT version when I want an easy drive!

I have all three versions - if you're looking for realism, the RailRight version, via AP, is absolutely the one to go for.

AP, Nothing else could possibly touch it. Best addon for the sim by a mile.

I'd go so far as to say that it's the best loco ever released for TS 20XX, IMHO.

Bear in mind you also get the former Digital Traction mk1 carriage pack somplete with Armstrong Powerhouse sounds chucked in to the £19.99. Most people were expecting to pay more.johnmckenzie wrote:No, on second thoughts - best addon by a million milesjohnmckenzie wrote:AP, Nothing else could possibly touch it. Re: Which Class 40? Just Trains or AP ?
Hi Mark,
I have the DT Class 40. Having been in touch with Tom of DT , regarding the total lack of cab sounds or engine noise, whilst in the cab view.
And as he could offer no explanation as to the reasons for this problem, was intrigued by your statement "the AP sound pack for the JT version".
I've searched AP web page and cannot find this and nor can I see it in my collection of AP stuff, and I have almost all of AP's offerings.
Could you point out where this is as I would like to see if it could work on the DT version, which is after all the same animal as the JT version.

Re: Which Class 40? Just Trains or AP ?
Sorry they discontinued the pack when the new class 40 came out. Might be worth asking Armstrong Powerhouse if you could still buy them though if you are desperately wanting them. I started off with the Dt then bought JT to sort out the issues with original. Then couldn't resist the AP version. No regrets!
Re: Which Class 40? Just Trains or AP ?
I have both also, AP version wins hands down, you might be thinking that at 19.99 it is more expensive than JT version but bearing in mind that on top of the £11.99 you would have paid another £4.99 to get a sound upgrade(although now discontinued) and to go get 8 scenairos with the AP version so this is equal to getting a scenario pack which sell for £4.99 so well worth £20 quid and has a lot more features.
Re: Which Class 40? Just Trains or AP ?
Thanks to all for the informative replies. It seems that the AP wins by a mile. I must admit that it has the most realistic appearance and the most advanced functions .
I only have a couple of concerns.
Is it a bit too sophisticated ? One respondent said it could only be driven in advanced mode. I like to drive from a realistic functioning cab, but I also like to drive from outside the cab, where I can admire an excellent loco and the scenery using the HUD for control and route awareness. Can the AP Class 40 be driven with the HUD ?
I note that AP point out that there is a special "save the scenario" procedure for this loco. Is it frame rate hungry ?
Thanks again to all for the responses.

The loco can be driven from the HUD like any other once you have completed the initial simple start-up procedure.

OK thanks. A bit like the JT Class 20 and Class 60 advanced ?
