Who's got the biggest TS install?

Post by rkk01 »

Not trying to encourage bragging or moaning about performance...

Looking to add a SSD to my setup, and contemplating size etc for Win 7 + TS2015...

Currently at 81gb and have a number of older addons not installed.

Out grown my 120gb SSD, so moved back to conventional 2TB hard drive.

If you simply must have an SSD consider using it for the OS and keep the game on a conventional spinning drive----seems to give most of the speed benefits without the fear of running out of space.

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

Thanks for the info - seems my install is fairly modest at somewhere around 50-60 gig...
(Although the GMG sales will see another 3 routes added ;-) )

Do you not get quicker load times with TS on the SSD? I had considered keeping windows on the spinner and just moving TS. However, I have now decided to put windows on the new drive to improve boot times.

Martin would be the one to ask for detailed timings as I don't have an SSD but much of the benefit (and why SSDs were originally used as fast cache device) will come from the frequently accessed files being cached by the OS on the system drive--which in this scenario would be the SSD. Windows has a tendancy to use the fastest drive available for all caching, page writes etc.
I dare say that the initial (non cached) loading of the game/scenarios wouldn't be as fast as that from an SSD for the game but subsequent loads would be.

Just out of interest, what kind of gain are you hoping to achieve and how long are your loading times now?--we could do a rough and ready comparison if you pick a route/scenario we all have.

214GB (sitting on 3TB 'spinner' with SSD drive for OS)

This is probably too big..... after multiple crashes (prior to the TS2015 upgrade, so not related to this!), I've broken this down into 4 separate installations - a 'virgin' Steam installation (87GB) plus dedicated installations outside of the Steam folder for UK (145GB), EU (60GB) and US (51GB) - things are now runnning a lot better. I maintain a 'full' installation for back-up purposes (which is where the 214MB comes from)

I think this is a great idea and would like to do this, could you explain how to do this in detail please, thanks.

Yeah, we've moved on a fair bit....

however, the amount of memory a computer has isn't what we're discussing here :o
