There was also the Mosel route from Koblenz to Trier which we have not heard much about recently.

It is a lovely drive along the winding river Mosel, a route along there would be quite nice I think.

There's a reason that even now when the SFS Köln - Frankfurt is an hour shorter I still prefer change trains in Köln and Mannheim if needed to take the IC/EC along the Rhine. The scenery is amazing, no matter what time of the year you are there. I'd love to drive the whole thing Köln - Mainz/Wiesbaden in TS, but right now I'll be more than happy with the section Köln - Koblenz.
