New release - Metro North Genesis (PC32 AC-DM)

Post by chrisonline »

OK, I'm not one of those finicky rivet-counting obsessive mistake-spotting people . . . but from the pictures of this newly released loco, it seems that the US flag is REVERSED on the right side of the cab (stars in the top right instead of the top left).

Isn't it very sad that DTG couldn't get that right? Now I know about the issue of using reversed textures etc, but it can also be worked around with child objects (I can't do it, but know it can be done!) So . . . WTH, DTG?

I'm not American but have lived here for 15 years, and it grates to see that. And to think that DTG didn't consider it important enough to make it right

(Yes, I also posted this in RWA and on the Railsimulator FB page)

The amusing thing is it is actually correct

so I guess it's Metro North that you should be complaining to not DTG :D Plus the fact if the flag is flying one way the other side will be reversed like that i.e the stars will always be at the side nearest to the pole.
regards
Edward

I believe there is a 'requirement' (?) for the US flag to be displayed with the stars in the forward direction. So on trains, vehicles, soldiers etc the flag will be correct on the left and reversed on the right.

That is correct Nat, after about 60 seconds research on t'net, I came across this passage:
The blue field of stars should always be in the highest position of honor. When viewing the flag on a wall, the highest position of honor is the upper left when displayed horizontally, and at the top (upper left) when displayed vertically. When displayed on a "moving object" like a person or vehicle, the highest position of honor is the front, and not the rear; so the field of blue should be displayed to the front.

I've now twice posted a further reply and it hasn't appeared. Am I being blocked?

trying again . ..

I eat humble pie, and apologize (and have done so to DTG/Railworks on their FB page). I don't habitually whine at DTG (and am irritated by those that do) but this just jumped out at me. Incorrectly, it seems. I hadn't even noticed it on US military uniforms before,I will look more closely now!

Now that you know, you'll see it everywhere - fire appliances, police cars, soldier's uniforms, aircraft...

There's a FDNY ladder truck that has the whole body painted in the stars and stripes - with the stars at the front on both sides.

But just to confuse the issue, here's what must have thrown me in the first place . . . thoughts from Amtrak? LOL! (photo taken by me in Atlanta, Georgia, Feb 2013)

It must be one of the few Amtrak locos it have the flag.

I did a quick search on Google and I could not spot any of the Amtrak P42's with a flag

They do like their flags on everything, don't they?

I remember DTG showing screenshots of this beast months ago, presumably there were licensing issues involved? It looks a good 'un, the carriages are quite attractive, and it has a passenger view! I do wish DTG would stop listing the "Simple/Expert Controls"tutorials as scenarios though.

Perhaps we should be at least mentioning the pros and cons of the product rather than just the US flag ? Incidently, I think DTG have got the flag in the correct position

I bought this mainly because of the push -pull facility offered by the Shoreliner Cab Car.

The Cab Car and coaches are excellent and the great news is that this Shoreliner set seems to work with most US locos, including the electric AEM 7 and ACs-64 ( including the in cab signalling ) . Therefore the possibility for "substitute " push pull " sets for Amtrak, NJT and SEPTA trains with suitable repaints is very good. There are a few minor bugs surrounding the ditch light etc, but on the whole this part of the package is good.

However the real bad news is that the P32 loco still emits diesel sounds and smoke when in d.c. third rail mode.
This is most disconcerting when underground in Grand central Station. After all, the need to eliminate diesel emmissions underground was the reason that the P32 was designed with dual mode in the first place !

I hope I'm not one of those people who "habitually whine " at DTG and so irritate people, but this is not a texture niggle, but a major flaw if I am correct.

Also from experience with many other DTG products fom the RSC King class to the Kawasaki M8 and NEC route, I don't suppose any bugs will be corrected any time soon.
