DTG to produce Liverpool - Manchester via Warrington Central

I'm a little surprised at the route choice. I sure it'll be absolutely lovely and the skyline shows it's a labour of love, but it's not a route that immediately comes to mind when I think of railways. I'm not bashing on it, just surprised!

I'm not familiar with the line though. Would anybody mind posting a quick crash course guide to it?

Flat and boring with no scheduled freight through the main part of it. Home of 158's 185's and 142's. Scenario possibilities are:

1. Drive a train from Manchester to Liverpool
2. Drive a train from Liverpool to Manchester

That's it.

So a bit like some of the more southerly routes then? Lets be fair, ECML is flat as a pancake as is London-Faversham, and 1/3 of that route is in tunnels.

Point me to a route that isn't 'drive from A to B'. Trains go from A to B whether up north, down south or wherever.

On a personal note though, I would like to see DtG making more routes one can chain scenarios with, like you can with Shap & WCMLN.

I know what you mean, that's why it needs to come with a class 185 unit to make it more popular as it only 35 miles long, I will buy it because has my home town in it otherwise it would only be a maybe if cheap

Well, though it appears to be set in the 2000s, we are waiting for a re-release through Steam of big 1-co co-1 diesel famous for Trans-Pennine workings through to the mid-80s. And if that doesn't materialise, then blasting between Lime Street to Edge Hill with a whistler, a goyle or a pair of bombs is probably all I will do.

I may be remembering wrongly, but I'm sure we even had Deltics winding down their lives out of Lime Street (to Newcastle?) and we could have a number of units alongside locos for fuller runs or short AI stints covering Class 20, 25, 31, 37, 40, peaks, 47s, 81-87 and 90s. That doesn't leave much missing tbf and I for one look forward to creating many a railtour, including Castle 5043 which I was lucky enough to are (and hear!) at Edge Hill.

Pretty sure they went via Rainhill and Eccles and onto Victoria.

The Deltic Prototype definitely operated in this vicinity somewhere. My dad grew up around Runcorn, Widnes, Warrington area and he clearly remembers seeing the big blue DP1 in action as steam died out.

However, the recent class 319 comes to mind...

I suppose the middle bit from Hunts Cross West Jn to Trafford Park, a mear 30 miles, not being electrified might discount the 319.

So if there is no new unit with the route the only option is a 150 in Northern colours or a 158 in East Midlands colours.

Until the late 80's when these were diverted through Piccadilly and therefore ran via (and called at) Warrington Central.

As a deltic nut, who spent half my youth riding behind them out of York, I can confirm that they did indeed visit Lime St. on Liverpool Newcastle services. In my day they deputised for failed Peaks occasionally. I have photos of them there when I tagged along for the ride sometimes. I was even Class 56 hauled on a Lime St-Newcastle train one Sunday, the 56 being swapped out at Leeds and working light from there to Knottingley.

They did indeed. Just jogged a memory of me getting a Newcastle to Liverpool in the final days of loco haulage. I meant to get off at Piccadilly but overdosed and ended up getting off at Birchwood instead. Could of been worse, I ended up in Glasgow Central once having got on a train at Oxford which I intended to get off at New St!
