Further to this Peter, I have ventured into the 'black hole of Calcutta' and retrieved some WTT's for the route.
The 1974/5 edition shows a M-S 0917 Crewe to Preston service booked for an EMU. SX and during the summer months this extended to Lancaster, from where it returned ECS to Preston and stabled. The return working was 1500 from Preston to Crewe. Originating from Crewe, this would almost certainly have been a Class 304 set.
By 1981/2, the only booked appearances of an EMU at Preston were a) a summer dated SO working, ECS from Soho (Birmingham) ready to work a 0935 service to New Street, and b) another SO summer dated service, the 1405 from Crewe which then returned ECS from whence it came. a) could well have been a 310 unit.
And we must not forget that by 81/82 we had the up and down workings of an class 370 APT set, if it was functioning of course

.

Richard
