Wireless Problems

Post by niclouse3 »

Hi guys,

Literally been trying to find a solution for this all day!

Recently purchased a game called DayZ (Is still and alpha, but none of my friends are having this issue) from steam, when playing online I can play for around 15-20 minutes before my connection to my router literally just cuts out. I am using a wireless connection through a wireless dongle to my router which is located downstairs. I have never had any problems with connection before. Every time the connection fails I have to go through the process of fixing the connection with the windows tools which resets the network card and instantly the connection is restored. One thing which was interesting is that windows reported a faulty wire connection but obviously I am using a non wired connection. Is my PC totally confused like me?

All drivers are fully updated.
Any help and guidance on what to do next would be appreciated,

Many thanks
Nick

Hi,

You could, perhaps, try changing the wireless channel your router is using. Does the wireless work OK with other games etc? Has it previously worked OK in the current position?

Technology eh?

Hi John,

Many thanks for your reply and suggestion.

I have tried changing the channel on my router but the same problem is still occuring unfortunately.

Wireless works perfectly with other games such as TS2014, and wireless worked fine on the original channel, no problems surfing the web or anything like that.

It's almost like a timer is set to cut my connection after 15 minutes of gameplay, very weird. Anyway, I shall keep searching for a solution.

Many thanks though John.

Hi Nick

Nuisance eh? Sounds like the game is doing something. I know nothing about that game ( nor most others :D )

As an 'alpha', it's likely to have bugs I guess - is there a feedback/forum etc ( apologies if you've already been there)

What antivirus s/ware do you use? Does it have an 'ignore' list - if so, you might try setting that on - though BEWARE !!!!! - make sure you understand what the av program is or isn't doing at that time. I have Norton av and it has, from time to time caused irritation by nipping off to check for updates etc whilst another program was active - setting the 'ignore' ( or whatever it was called ) in my case stops Norton checking for updates whilst that prog is running - but still does all the other protection stuff.

As a long shot, I think there's something called Windows Zero time controller as part of the power management options. I think this shuts down some LAN components on timed intervals. May be worth a look at the settings. It seems unlikely that that would be affected by a game but - hey - this is m$ windows.

As a last resort you could try the M$ help http://support.microsoft.com/?ln=en-gb

We had a similar issue with wife's laptop, but that went away on changing wireless channel.

Good luck!

Do you have the option for a wired connection, even temporarily?
If so do you lose connection on that?
When playing do you have a particularly high ping? It may be the case that the server decides your connection is too slow and kicks you.
Pressing "P" in game should list all the players on that server and show their (and your) ping, is yours higher/highest?

Did you play the Arma 2 mod version and if so did you have the same issues?

I'm on a wired connection and still sometimes get kicked if other people in the house are streaming/downloading stuff but mostly am able to play without issue.

Many thanks for the reply John and Dave.

My ping is showing as 20 - 21 -27 which is one of the lowest, so no problem with the ping I am thinking.

Have done some messing around with channels and have come to little but some success. I can now play the game for around 50 minutes without the connection cutting, although I still get some losing connection signs. (This is also with nobody else using the internet in the house)

Never played Arma 2 mod, I am only using DayZ standalone.

I will keep looking into things, once again many thanks John and Dave for your help.

One other thing Ive just thought of,
Is the server full and if so are you in the same territory.
ie (and I don't know if the DayZ servers do this but) If I played on a US server, and the server was full, It may kick me (being in the UK) for another US player who was attempting to join.

Just a thought

Hi guys,

Sorry for the late reply, thought I better let you know what the problem was.

My USB dongle was overheating and causing the connection to cut. :-?

Thanks for all your help and assistance though, much appreciated.

If you are using a desktop PC and have a spare PCI slot it might be worth considering a internal PCI WIFI card.

I had countless wireless problems, had VirginMedia support remote controlling the PC, changed all sorts of settings. If a phone tried to use Youtube then it locked up and had to be powered off and rebooted, same for iPlayer. In the end I got so frustrated I ordered a replacement router from Amazon - installed and set it up identically and I have had no dropped connections in 3 months.

The outward router was a Belkin G Wireless router, new one is a TP-Link.
