Flippin AVG Anti-virus...

Hello all,

I have the free AVG program, and usually I have no problems with it, but is anyone else having a once in a blue moon issue with it with TS2014?

I've only had it twice so far but it does occur and is rather annoying. The second time happened today, I start up TS2014 then the loading screen freezes and, for some reason, it reckons railworks.exe is a threat. I can either add it to the exceptions list, which this time failed, or remove the threat. The last time I added it to the exceptions list, it was apparently processing but took so long I just forced the thing to close. It doesn't matter what I do, it deletes railworks.exe so I have to verify the cache just to get the file back, and then go through the process of putting the sound packs, logo patches etc back..it's just a pain.

Anyone else getting this? Maybe I should just use another anti-virus program?

I use AVG 2014 free edition and have no problems. Have you got it set to game mode ? You can set this by opening up AVG then select options and then advanced settings, scroll down a bit and tick the box if not already ticked.

It's been a long time since I used AVG but there is an option in the settings to exclude folders from 'on demand scanning' --- in other words when you access/run the files in them. See if adding the TS2014 folder to that helps. An e-mail to AVG wouldn't go amiss, then they can work on getting the AV engine to recognise that railworks.exe isn't a nasty.
There's no need to consider switching to another program, all AV programs throw up false positives--without exception.
To aid a little until you get it sorted, why not just turn off AVG whilst you copy railworks.exe to a USB stick or CD so you can quickly put it back if it deletes it again? (not sure if AVG Free Edition has the option to quarantine rather than delete but that's an option to consider too)

I too had this problem some time ago. Uninstalled AVG and put Avast on there instead. Solved my problem.

I have heard of people saying that they had Avast and it caused them problems and went over to AVG free and had no problems. Not on this forum though.

Hmm strange, some people have problems on AVG, others don't. I also went to add it to the exceptions list (managed to find it, hardly been on the AVG interface ) only to find railworks.exe is on the list anyway....hmmm I don't know when it crashed if it did put an exception on, or if it was on the list already but was still claiming it to be suspicious, I have no idea.

I'll send an e-mail to AVG to at least see if they can count it as an exception and that it is safe.

I have used various iterations of AVG Free over the years- mainly with no complaints... (an unpleasant flaming on an FS forum for asking advice on why the forum owner's DLC aircraft scored a hit... And a few unpleasant infections)

The recent switch to Win 7 got me thinking about other AV alternatives. A few techs on another forum always reckoned MSE was the best bet for free protection. Can anyone on here offer any thoughts?

£40 a year for 3 computers, absolute bargain. Trouble free internet security, relatively simple to use program that runs in the background without hogging resources.

Used it for years, can't recommend it enough.

MSE is no longer recommended nor supported any longer by Microsoft
This was widely reported a few months back on various computer websites and in the press
I was a former user of MSE up until the official announcement and advised to find an alternative
