Barrier coaches?

Post by smarty2 »

Does anyone know if someone did a coach or wagon for coupling a loco up to an southern Mk1 EMU set? Trying to make a scenario that requires this because the class twenties had hook couplers.

You could try the barrier FSA wagons from http://www.uktrainsim.com/filelib-info. ... leid=26782

Yes, barrier FSA wagons are included in the download. Worth a try.

You shouldn't need them. Mk1 EMUs had drophead buckeye couplers. They were supported on the drawhook, by lifting them and removing a pin, the buckeye dropped clear of the hook. It could then be coupled using a screw coupling to any compatible loco (so, pretty much anything - including a 20), after extending the buffers. In the winter of '87, when units were failing due to iced up conductor rails, loco haulage of CIG/VEP/CEP stock was common, even as far as using a Class 56 at one point.

Interesting, and thank you for clearing that up, I have used a conflat barrier truck as it is more stable coupling up to the EMU's, otherwise you get a derailment even doing less than 1 mph :o !?

Ok, why not just couple the loco to the EMU?

EMU's such as 4 Big, 4 Cig and 4 Cep have Buffers and the Buckeye coupling drops down like a Mark One coach. Then extended air pipes are used to couple the low level pipes on the loco to the EMU's waist level pipes.

IIRC coupling CIGs / VEPs together in the editor is fine, but as soon as you try it in scenario, *bang* derailment. So it sounds like the bounding box issue with these units still isn't perfect. Try making the consist up in the editor as this'll likely work, but spoil your scenario.

That is odd, as i have had success with a scenario i've got in limbo land (takes a long time to go through and test it) never had a derailment issue. But i haven't used it for a while now though. Locomotive i was using is the 33 though.

Rising Storm -Name is in the credits :D - To Do scenario, where you go along at 50mph in a Pendo? Who would play it?
Anyone want to help in Play Testing future Rising Storm/ Ro2 Maps? If so please PM me.

Ditto.

No problems with the Class 33 coupling to the 4 Cig.

So how about using a Mk1 BG as a connecting vehicle to couple to an EMU?
When the operators wish to move a set of HST Mk3's without the power cats they just couple a BG or something that has Buckeye coupling.

Also have you got coupling override ticked in the Game controls?

As I said fellas, I am using a nice little conflat with the requisite yellow and black stripes! :) I don't think either that a 33 would be used to cart the 4 Cig's up to Donny works?

Actually Martin, your nearer the mark than you might think.

I remember Class 313 units on their way back from overhaul at York (IIRC) to Hornsey being hauled through Donny. Adapted Conflat wagons were used as the barriers, with BR standard 20t brake vans at the outer ends, ie. brake - conflat - EMU - conflat - brake.

I think the train was Class 31 hauled :)

At the end of the the day we each have something that works.
The conflat shown in the picture is not fitted with brakes and the units would have been dragged at 35mph.

And although you think a 33 would not have carted the 4Cig's to Doncaster I don't think the units would have gone there either.
But at least the 33's used to be more common :)

SR EMU's would normally have received works attention at either Chart Leacon, Eastleigh or Swindon (and maybe even Horwich).

In all my years of frequenting Donny station and works, I do not recall seeing any SR EMU sets there. Plenty of scrap Class 306 sets in the yard and the aforementioned units passing through en route to/from York though.

Having said that Martin, with a bit of creative licence, I am sure you could knock something up that fits the bill :)
