I have the DEM data in the right place.
When I hit the T-button, nothing happens....

It hasn't been hitting the T button since TS2013 came in. In the terrain tools there is a grey looking landscape with an up arrow (I'm at work trying to recall from memory) hit this and you shall get DEM options.
