It's time for backup before TS2014

Post by vlado960 »

I made a backup of content and renamed Railworks folder in TS2013. I wanted a clean install before TS2014. But when I wanted to get back backup, then Steam starts to download and does not install from my backup folder. Why do I have to spend my internet bandwith? Did I miss something?

Did you use the Steam tool "Backup Game Files..." which is available when right-clicking on the Train Simulator 2013 listing in your Steam library?

If not, then it will only try to download from Steam.

If you copied everything manually, then it's up to you to put your manual backup back in place before starting Steam in online mode.

Anyway, this Steam tool backs up only the files and folders that are game default or DLCs purchased in Steam store.
With this tool the third party addons are excluded.
Better make a backup manually.

My computer is set to create a backup image of the whole machine at 22:00 every night so I should not have any problems. I usually keep the images for around 5 days.
I used a database creation program many years ago which every few days put a pop-up on the screen which said "Blessed be the pessimistic, for they have backups"

I have a slave drive and will use that to back up the 80 or so gig work of folders :-)

I will run in on a Wednesday I think.

Have backed up my complete RailWorks folder in readiness,One question though, Which Assets & Content folder is best to have active before I open Steam for the update on the day ? the one that has all the default assets & Routes ? ie the original ones, or the ones that have all the extra addon routes and assets.

Backing up commenced at 9:48am to slave drive. I will let that run while I am at the gym / work. ;-)

Not backing up anything. If anything goes wrong I well just reinstall things via installers or the package manager. Never did when the 2013 upgrade came either.

I think that it's mostly route developers that need to. Major updates tend to break things to the point sometimes where they cannot even load the route they have been working on for many months!

Generic users such as myself may as well just let it auto-update - I'm never gonna die just because an update doesn't work the first time or I have to wait a few days for a fix...

I am backing up, though I'm not a route developer, because I think it's no bad thing to make an occasional back-up of the Assets and Contents folders. Yes, it's simple enough to refresh the DLC from Steam if it all goes pear-shaped but I don't relish the idea of reinstalling all my third-party add-ons.

Never had to, even when the base code has gone wrong, just a Verify has fixed the problem eventually from the Steam side. No 3rd party stuff has ever been effected on my system, whatever has happened.

My AP sound stuff obviously always gets replaced, but I have all of this in a separate folder-structure that I can just copy over the top if/when I've been forced to Verify the files.

Why? Does the installation of RW2014 involve a full file verification? I doubt it. Unless they are changing the file structure in some way I cant see how the asset folder will be altered at all? There is no warning from RSC to Backup?

EDIT: I do hope we are not going to get a new TS2014 sub forum on here. Hopefully they will just amend the forum title. There is not much changing after all and no one will still be running TS2013.

I've backed up so that if there turn out to be any significant bugs with TS2014, I can still play TS2013 while waiting for them to get fixed.

Having said that, I've also taken Steam off-line now and I'll wait for the early adopters to report back...

I'm backing up entirely so I can still use TrackIR with my offline TS2013 once the TS2014 update has destroyed JSJ's working solution.

No point in playing any version of TS without TrackIR, it just doesn't seem right.
