GPU...to upgrade or not to upgade!!

Post by thebumb »

Hi Guys,

Can I have a bit of advice from you all.... :)

I currently have a i5-3570k system with 8 GB ram.
The GPU I have is an MSI twin frozer III GTX570 1.25GB GPU which I'm thinking of upgrading to a GTX670 2GB (or even a GTX770 if I can persuade the missus).

I mainly run Railworks, racing games (F1 2012, RF2, CARS...etc), Flight sims (IL2 Cliffs of Dover and Rise of Flight) Skyrim and Tomb Raider 2013. All of them are run at 1440 x 900 (the limit of my display).
My aim is to run at higher GFX quality settings along with increased FPS.

Would an upgrade to one of the above be worth it?

Thanks in advance.
Stu.

I can't comment on how much difference you might notice with an upgrade from the GTX570 but I've just got a new PC with a GTX760 2GB which is, according to reviews, almost identical in performance to the slightly more expensive GTX670.

I've got a similar CPU to you, same RAM and together with the GTX760 it comfortably eats Railworks for breakfast on full max settings, 2x2 SSAA and HD 1900x1080.

The graphics card you currently have is still quite respectable so you should be able to claw some money back on eBay or the like if you sell it on.

My new system (specs below) has a GTX670 2GB in it and it doesn't appear to be break into a sweat at all with TS2013. I have my detail settings all up at their highest, resolution at 1920 X 1080, AA on SSAA 2X2 with FXAA disabled courtesy of a handy little patch available from UKTrainSim. I have switched the FOV and Bloom 'off' as I prefer pin-sharpness to blur. I can't tell you what framerate I'm getting but my first test was to run a superb scenario called 'You've Got Mail' on WLOS, the opening scene of which is very busy and throws a multitude AI steam traffic at you from every direction. It ran so smooth it was like watching an old movie - quite thrilling! As far as I'm concerned, I can't recommend the GTX670 enough. I don't have any experience of a GTX570 running TS2013, however, according to the Tom's Hardware Graphics Card Hierarchy, your existing GPU is only two tiers below the GTX670 in terms of performance. Tom's recommend a minimum of three tiers when upgrading in order to gain an appreciable difference in performance. Based on that, I would suggest stretching to the GTX770 if you really must upgrade.
Cheers,
Andy

<<Agree with Jimmyshand,I went from a 560GTX to a 760GTX(4gig)immediately noticed how fluid game play was with graphics maxed out (including shadows)
Best upgrade iv'e had in a few years.I'm also running quad core and 8 gig ram.The biggest jump in FPS did not come from RW but ARMA3,amazed how easily
it can handle all the eye candy.I bought it mainly for simulations DCS,RW ect.

Going from 300 odd cores(GTX560) to 1152 cores(GTX760) and double bandwidth, you can see where the money has went.

as near as damn it have the same computer spec as you, I went from a gtx 570 to a gtx 670 and what have I noticed

A) At 1920x1080 at full sliders hardly any difference

B) when down scaling from3200X1800 TO 1920X1080 I get double the frame rates and of course using this technique great visuals so if you plan to use high resolutions then go for a gtx 670

But maybe wait to see what ts 2014 brings first

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking that to wait until we see was 2014 brings was the best thing to do, but Overclockers have a `MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC Twin Frozr Power Edition 2MB' for 200 quid which is tempting...buy me buy me!

Is it true to say that higher spec cards have more of an advantage when working with higher resolutions than what I currently use? What does increased memory give you?

Cheers again!
