I'm having difficulty placing makers although I've done it in the past so maybe i'm just doing it wrong?

If I place a destination marker to make a train go a specific way I always get the warning sign about wrong direction, incorrect electrification etc, even when I put in on a straight piece of track ahead of the train and ask the train to go via the marker I always get the same message. I guess I'm doing something very obviously wrong, but I cant think what...any ideas?
