Bring on the Blues...?

It's great to see some new steam engines in development, and I'm sure I will go for a Std 4 and / or 5 at some stage.... *

BUT - it would be great to see some of the developers turning their attention to BR blue era diesels

I appreciate that many of you will have the previous incarnations of common 80s stock, but for a new user there is much that would be a "must buy" if offered as a TS2013 model with a good sound set from the start...

I'm a 'new user' of TS2013 too and I feel I am missing out on some of the stuff previously available, yet currently unavailable. They really need to bring out the driveable Class 08 again and the original Class 101 in blue/grey (and even the white with blue stripe). Will they ever come back out? Along with the Class 45 that was shown as DLC when I first got the game, and the 50 and the 56 and the 60 etc (though I now have the 3rd party 56 and the JT60 from elsewhere).

A Class 104 DMU too please... and single car parcels unit Class 128... EPBs and HAPs... Thumpers (the thumper on MSTS was hellfire).

On the loco front, WCML North is crying out for more AL1 to AL5 and Class 87/90 electric traction types.

I appreciate that some 3rd party developers have a range of BR Blue fayre out there, particularly those that cannot be named, but it would be great to see some competition in that realm, with the game hosts giving us some more, updated items from that era...

There is going to be a Class 87 from DT and a Class 90 from waggonz, i would love a Class 104 DMU with rasping exhausts and some more First gen DMUS and EMUS, I think RAILRIGHT will be the company making all the BR blue era trains.

Have to agree - this really is a major area of interest amongst enthusiasts - with plenty of photo publications to support and inspire us.

Can sit with green diesels at one end of the timescale and with Railfreight at the other - plus includes some really iconic loco types still active in the 70s/early 80s - and did I mention - loco hauled passenger trains!!!

yes, have to agree, the blue era is very appealing!

My sole interest in railways is the BR blue period. There has been a big, long lull in anything coming out from this era and I dearly wish the devs would address it. Much of the stock that does exist for this era was created in the sims infant days and therefore lacks the quality, features and all round polish that we now expect today. Some of the third party content for this era suffer from terrible sounds also.

My interest in the sim has been fading recently as a direct result of no DLC of any interest being produced. The only DLC purchases I've made in a very long time are some AP pro-soundpacks. RSC have not produced anything rail blue since the class 33 as far as I can recall and seemingly have nothing in the pipeline either.

It's a real shame because as someone pointed out above, this is an era with a massive enthusiast following and it's the era of a generation that grew up during the rise of PC simulation and thus are very likely to have a home PC capable of running Railworks.

Where to start on BR blue...

Well, for me, back to my teenage days in Devon & Cornwall - was always pretty dismissive of the duffs, which is what we do have... so a 50 (or 4: unrefurb, refurb blue, LL & GW green ), some decent 37s for the clay, and some Peaks for the long- distance clay & NE-SW passenger services. Don't yet know what the DLC 31 and 33 are like, but used to see both at Exeter on a regular basis.

Exeter was always a good day out - bit more variety, especially with the 33s from SR and occasional 40s on the Meldon stone trains. Missed the 25s in Cornwall, but always liked the type.

So out of that lot:

31 & 33 - will buy at some stage
50 & 37 - current routes fundamentally flawed without. Would buy a re-releasd 50 straight away.
Peak - like the 31 & 33. Would certainly buy, but probably not straight away

I am pretty sure in this country anyway we are stuck in the steam age romance - and why not...

You ask my 5-year old daughter to draw me a train, she will draw a steam engine. You ask her to make the noise of a train, and she will imitate a steam train. Even though I run BR Blue diesels round my garden, with sound. And, for what it's worth, when I have had a pint, I do a cracking imitation of a Class 20 winding up and back down again.

Anyway,
though I am too young to remember BR steam, I can't deny some romance involved in driving and experiencing steam locomotives and the 'much nicer' times of the steam era. I love standard steam locos, LNW locos, LMS locos, some LNE locos, some Southern locos and a very small number of GW types. So, I am happy to buy steam related routes and steam era locos and stock if they appeal to me. I'm a customer, just like the next man.

I don't do Europe in Train-Sim, in fact, I don't do foreign full stop - and that's my choice. I hanker to try and experience the railway I grew up with, the one I wanted to join and the one I finally did join.

To cater for the broad spectrum, I guess RSC are catering for the steam enthusiasts and the more modern market with what is currently on offer, right up to the ultra-modern, 'high speed' plastic units and routes. We will be going back to the steam days again soon with WLOS, though some creative action will see diesels run over this route through scenario creation/modification etc. And that's great to a point.

But there is a gulf - the BR Blue period from the 1970s to the 1980s. Okay, some of your slam door EMUs on the southern routes are fine and dandy (and hellfire at times). But like a crazed Sith Lord, I want more... I need more... Keep me interested.

How I miss those Westcountry days of Peaks, 50's, 37's, 33's, 47's, plus occasional visitors in the form of 31's etc, heck even the Valenta HST's, proper magic! Today, the scene in Devon where I live is truly grim. A staple diet of Voyagers (DMU), 150 (DMU) and "silenced" MTU HST's is all we get with just the rare occasional glimpse of a loco in the form of the ubiquitous class 66!

As recently as the early 2000's there were still some loco hauled Virgin services in operation, now it really is all over and even the lines of old loco's that stood at various yards up and down the land have steadily emptied, pratically every diesel has now been scrapped. 40 odd years of favourite diesels and electrics have now been permanently consigned to history.

I remember not so long ago when 47's were seen as "boring" and widespread. Now I'd do anything for a cross country trip on a duff! 47's were always considered not as loud and thrash-worthy as some of their cousins but a year or so ago there was a 47 railtour down to Devon and so I took my kids up to my old vantage point on Hemerdon Bank to experience a "proper" train! Well, the thing that struck me (and the kids) the most was the sound. Back in the day, 47's were the quieter of the bunch but as this thing approached the climb at Hemerdon you could literally feel the throb of the diesel through the ground and the soundwaves through the air from about a mile away! When all you've heard for years is the pathetic rattle of plastic DMU's, you quickly forget what a proper locomotive at full power sounds like... earth shattering!
