No-CD fix for MSTS 2

Post by nelson »

Hi, can anyone help me? I recently aquired a no-cd fix for MSTS version 2
(legal?), and don't know how to get it to work. Where does it need placing? Does it need renaming? It's an .ACE file size 1.2mb. Pain in the neck having to run it from CD, especially after paying £35!!! Another fine mess microsoft!!

MSTS isn't run from the CD, and it does not need the CD in the CD-ROM to play. When I first installed it I found it would work fine on an empty CD tray. Then one day I did some upgrade work on my PC and now MSTS does ask for a CD but in fact any will do. I use a blank one. Very odd and no idea how that happened!

I have never needed the CD but I think those eho bought V1.2(not upgrade), needs the CD. So maybe MSTS 2 will need the CD as well.

It seems sometimes you do... and sometimes you don't. But perhaps the neccessity for having the CD in the drive when running MSTS has been included with the latest CD build. If that's the case, then all you can do is put the CD in the drive.

Somehow I dont think you have MSTS2, Maybe V1.2

You could try opening the file with WinRar, It might give you a exe file, Or a virus.. By the sounds of it probably the later

Firstly if its an ACE file, its either a graphic or you need WinAce compression application to uncompress it.

Secondly, I very much doubt its MSTS 2, if it every, everyone on this forum will be outside your house tonight...

Thirdly I think 1.2mb is way too tiny considering MSTS 1 occupies 2 cdroms.

Most likely its an app that alters some setting in your registry to fool it into thinking youve got the Retail version..

If you bought MSTS when it came out first, you dont need the CD.
If you bought it a few months ago (I think) then they made it so you do need the CD.

That's a bit ..

Your PC will get "Slowdown" from the CD reading and the Drive being Active. :(

plus it knackers up the CD. :x

I lost The Sim's House Party because the cd was running all the Time and got a scratch. :(

If msts 1.2 or above requires the CD all the time, they are Liable for any damage to your CD and "MUST" replace any damaged cd.

I get a please Insert Disk on Editor's and Tool's, if I have had a cd in the Drive before I use the Editor's, just press Ignore. Then after a re-boot of Pc it never ask's again. :)

I think that any attempt to "roger the mainbrace" will result in splinters (slivers to the North Americans) in very painfull places and will not be a truly pleasurable experience!!!!

I have upgraded to V1.2 (downloaded files) and was getting the request for a cd but only with RE, a couple of times each time a route was selected.

To speed up the system, I have within the last few days set up XP to run with the standard Windows layout (via Control panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Visual Effects, and check Adjust for best performance). Ever since, that request for the cd has not appeared.

I dont think its looking for the msts cdrom in particular, I think it remembers valid drives for a while. Ive seen the message a few times and just reboot to clear it. Im using an older version of MSTS btw and its been upgraded. Im not sure about the new version though I wouldnt put it past MS

If its like Midtown Madness or other MS Games, you can usually remove the cdrom from the drive once youve started up.

I know its a contraversial matter but I understand you are allowed to make copies of cd's for your own personal backup. I never work off the master, always from a copy just to prevent damage to the master cd.

Rogering the mainbrace would NOT give you splinters.

The mainbrace in a man of war is the daily spirit or wine ration. Splicing is the fixing together of 2 ropes, hawsers, sheets etc.

Hence splicing the mainbrace means join 2 mainbraces together, or in seamen's terms "double-up on the grog ration". It's a way of giving the crew a reward for some reason or another. :drinking: :drinking:

So rogering the mainbrace, would entail either pouring sea-water into the ration, or getting a bit damp. ;) Nowt to do with splinters at all, although if the crew found you doing either, splinters would be the least of your problems. :o
