Something went corrupt when you upgraded to RS2013, but updates and/or verifying cache should have ironed that out since, right gptech?

Yes, in theory Steam is 'self healing' so running the verify routine should have fixed any corrupt files. It doesn't always work first time though, so running verify again may be needed. However, this only works if Steam can write to the game directories; there's a slight possibility that UAC/Windows System File Protection can prevent this---the biggest reason why you'll see folk recommending that installation should be outside of any 'Program Files' folder.black8 wrote:but updates and/or verifying cache should have ironed that out since, right gptech?
Harry, when did you allow the update to TS2013 to take place?

Is certainly one way round it, it's basically how TS2012 ran as that demandedadministrative rights whereas TS2013 doesn't.dean1986 wrote:Run as administrator?
It should only be seen as a stop gap measure though, running with elevated privilages is not recommended when they're not needed.

Re: TS2013 wont work, HELP!!
1. Rename your x:\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks folder to Railworks_Original
2. Do a verify cache and Steam will download your complete Railworks TS2013 folder again, and see if that works. (download will take a while depending upon your connection speed).
3. Once you get the complete new one running, then you can copy any routes/assets you had in the old folder across a few at a time.

Just going off topic here a bit...Why is this simulator so 'self destructive'gptech wrote:...... Steam is 'self healing' so running the verify routine should have fixed any corrupt files.
By just playing yesterday I ran into a fair number of SBHH's for no apparent reason, s.a. after saving progress in a scenario for example. TS 2013 upgrade has seen an enormous increase of SBHHs imo. Most problems for me at the moment are on the WCML-N and appears to be with 3rd party content (scenario's etc.)

Re: TS2013 wont work, HELP!!
Basically, it isn't.....though it's relatively easy for the end user to 'mess things up', that's when the verify routine comes in handy for fixing problems with default, core files. There should be no need to regularly verify as most of the things you add on to the game don't touch those files anyway.black8 wrote:Just going off topic here a bit...Why is this simulator so 'self destructive'
See what I mean?black8 wrote:Most problems for me at the moment are on the WCML-N and appears to be with 3rd party content (scenario's etc.)
Whilst it's true that improvements to the game have changed how some 3rd party content behaves/interacts verifying will not solve that, nor should it be seen as RSC's problem to fix---though I'd expect them to work closely with affected providers to reach a solution.
If you're having bother with freeware stuff from sites such as this, then you either have to wait for the originator to sort it out, ask if anybody else has already sorted it, or sort it yourself. Bear in mind that a problem in a scenario could be caused by the route having an issue, or an item of stock not behaving, as easily as by the scenario itself.
Saving progress in scenarios crops up quite often, the recommendation is to save when your train is stood--particularly if you're driving a steam engine with a 'pony truck' leading bogie.

Re: TS2013 wont work, HELP!!
All fair & true but I started thinking yesterday when I did not add anything new to the game, drove in some scenarios that came with the J94 with no problems. Only when I drove a Diesel on the WCMLN, a 3rd party scenario that gave me no problems before (no steam loco with pony truck leading bogie, that indeed tend to jump from the track after saving while at speed nowadays) the SBHH came when I saved the progress; I restarted the scenario several times but the SBHH persisted. I did verify the cache just to see if this would take care of the SBHH (not checked yet if it did, will do tonight) I ended up with some 210 items that needed to be 'reacquired'. That is my issue, I don't know what causes this; no 'end user messing things up' yesterday. I was only playing. Now these things sometimes spoil the fun for me.

Re: TS2013 wont work, HELP!!
Even though we have moved off topic, until Harry gets back we might as well talk amongst ourselves....
If you're having bother with scenarios etc from sites such as this, then the thread at http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... &sk=t&sd=a might be of interest. It goes through various stategies for dealing with issues, and towards the end the discussion moves around to deal with the points I was trying to make earlier; 'end user messing things up' wasn't aimed specifically at yourself but as a general catch all for the guy driving the train, the guy providing the livery, the guy providing the timetable....
When you verify the game and get the message "xxx files failed to verify..." it means just that; Steam couldn't determine whether or not the files were valid and just to be on the safe side it'll get new ones----not only could this be because of a duff file, but a slow connection between PC and Steam server could cause packets to be lost so Steam never receives any validation data for some files. I'd imagine that when flagged for re-acquiring a further check is made but it doesn't mean that files that fail verification are indeed faulty. Of course Steam can only verify what it recognises, so if you've not changed any of the default files then verifying is a waste of time. However.....when you (or any of us) install stuff as .rwp's, how often do we check before installing exactly what will be added or changed?---not very often I'd say so it's possible that something added days or weeks ago could make a change in something completely unrelated to why you installed it, and you get issues later when using whatever has been spuriously changed. As I said, relatively easy to mess things up, you don't have to do it all by yourself.

Welcome back Harry....
when you un-installed did you re-install back into the same directory structure?
If so, I'd suggest that you have another go but this time install Steam, and therefore the game, OUT of the C:\Program Files (or it's (x86) brother). If nothing else it reduces to a minimum any interference from Windows System File Protection/UAC.

Depends on how good a laptop you get.... and I suppose on how you set it up.EWSmad09 wrote:i am thinking of getting a new laptop, would it still not work?

Re: TS2013 wont work, HELP!!
Firstly, have you contacted RailSim's Support? They know a lot more about their game. Send them an email and attach a DXDiag. To get your DXDiag simply push the Windows key and 'R' at the same time and type dxdiag.exe then save the information and attach it to an email. Not too sure if you can upload them to here, but if you can try and upload it to this site.
Laptop's aren't really supposed to be used with TS2013 and so that could be why.
Have you tried running directly from the Railworks.exe in the file library? You can find it located here in your Computer if you are running a 64 bit PC.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Railworks.exe
But like I say send an email to RSC, tell them every step you have done already and then I'm 100% sure that they will get it working again for you.
