Possible "Theoretical" Headcodes
I'm in the process of making a few scenarios for the Settle & Carlisle and was wondering if one of the more knowledgeable members could shout me out a few possible headcodes for the following.
1) Carlisle to Appleby stopper
2) Appleby to Carlisle stopper
3) A couple of random S&C freights (northbound and southbound....maybe 1 tanks and 1 OBAs each direction)
4) A WCML express (again one north and one south)
I am not looking for a great long list of codes but merely a few things that look more right than what comes up randomly allocated when you place a loco in Scenario Editor.
Thanks

1 and 2. They all seem to run as 2Hxx, although there seem to be the odd fast service running as a 1Mxx (toward Carlisle) or 1Exx (away from Carlisle)
3. Freights look to be 6Mxx, 6Sxx, 6Jxx.
4. Down expresses (northbound) are 1Sxx, lower number earlier in the day, higher number later in the day. Up trains (southbound) are 1Mxx.
For future reference if you want real headcodes and times.
http://www.opentraintimes.com - for passenger times.
http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browseDire ... ber%202012 - for freight.

Have a gander on this website for the letter codes for the local areas around Carlisle, Manchester, Blackpool, etc, etc.

it would depend on when you wish to set a scenario as most of the information ion the page is for the 1961 & 1976.
The current Carlisle area headcodes are below
[replace the 00 with a different number]
For Express trains -
1S00 for trains to Scotland
1E00 for trains from Scotland to Newcastle
1M00 for trains from Scotland to Carlisle and the South
1A00 for trains starting from Carlisle to London
1G00 for trains starting from Carlisle to Brimingham
When the Cross Country service was run by Virgin there were 1V00 services to Bristol & the West Country.
For local services -
2C00 for trains to/from Workington/Whitehaven/Barrow
2H00 for trains to/from Appelby/Skipton/Leeds
2N00 for trains to/from Newcastle
Freight trains pass thru the area and their headcode depends on the destination.
E for Eastern Region
M for London Midland Region
O for Southern Region
S for Scottish Region
V for Western Region

Re: Possible "Theoretical" Headcodes
Thanks guys. This all very interesting stuff.
My scenarios are being built using only the stock from the S&C pack itself and one other loco. So really the timeframe is either late 60s/early 70s or present day only.....with a "preserved" player loco at play in the latter case.
Thanks again.

Re: Possible "Theoretical" Headcodes
Another modern oddity
Certain long distance XC services under Virgin used to travel as class 9 trains rather than 1 to distinguish them from "normal" expresses.

Re: Possible "Theoretical" Headcodes
Were they supposed connections with Eurostar services? ( which iirc are also class 9 now ).

Re: Possible "Theoretical" Headcodes
No, the Eurostars were class 9 when they ran on domestic lines, nothing to do with the XC class 9s, don't know if they still are on HS1. The XC ones used them on long distance services, like the Cornwall to Scotland services. It was so signalers could differentiate between one of their "normal" class 1s and the long distance inter-regional XC services.Kariban wrote:Were they supposed connections with Eurostar services? Re: Possible "Theoretical" Headcodes
I don't mean actual regional Eurostars, there were some connecting services run at some point with Eurostar ticketing, iirc. Moot point, anyway.
My posts are my opinion, and should be read as such.

Re: Possible "Theoretical" Headcodes
I know what you mean. The connecting services just ran as 1Oxx as they terminated on the Southern.Kariban wrote:I don't mean actual regional Eurostars, there were some connecting services run at some point with Eurostar ticketing, iirc. Moot point, anyway.
If you look at
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/ ... show_stp=1
you will see the Eurostars still run as 9Oxx or 9Ixx because the old train describer system could not deal with a number as the second character.
In real life they are advertised as 90xx or 91xx and use those numbers in France and Belgium
