Train Simulator 2013 package manager.

I just turned UAC off. I know I know I know. Been running with it off for a couple of months with no problems.

I must be being really thick . with windows explorer I have looked in every file in the steam directories and files for the utilities.exe file but cant find it anywhere .

It isn't in a folder, it's amongst all the various dll's etc, in the Railworks folder, scroll down and you'll see the little icon. I'll do a screenshot, so, y'all know what to look for.

Do a copy and paste onto your Desktop, then it'll be handy in future.

Everything else in the update is perfect . all the content is there and It all works fine but i just cant find the utilities file to get the package manager to add future new content.

Any idea what i'm doing wrong.

I had to verify the cache 3 times before I got the Utilities .exe( strange?)...it eventually appeared in the Steam/steamapps/common/railworks folder, near the bottom as it's "U" . It's called "Utilities" and its an Application file 550Kb ....as people say make a shortcut on the desktop. then it's ( nearly) as convenient as TS2012/ RW2/RW1, but not quite.

Here is little snippet from one of the emails I received from RSC support concerning the package manager during the course of my emailing with them to and fro over other matters . quote : "Package manager is gradually being phased out" . end quote.

Not sure how true this is though,but when I asked for a little more info as to how .rwp files will be installed and handled in the future ,amongst other things that particular question was evaded by them . I have noticed though that the last two new DLC,s that I have bought via Steam do not appear listed in the package manager as previous purchases have been in the past, once downloaded and installed. Start of the phase out already ?

I find that abit questionable and supicious, wouldn't be the first time a support email has spread mis-information and scaremongering, especially since removal of the package manager effectly stops any kind if installation or 3rd party via .rwp files. They maybe phasing it out to introduce a better installation method or a new installation tool which isn't reliant on frameworks, but a complete phase out would render alot of DLC outside of RSC and freeware completely useless.

I also think people are going to ask you to post a solid and credible source from the email, as it really does seem like a stupid decision for RSC to make, plus I'd believe you would see it plastered all over forums if they were phasing it out.

Dear Antony

Thank you for contacting the Railsimulator.com customer support, your enquiry has been logged with a member of our dedicated customer support team.

Unable to do that Antony Package manager is gradually being phased out I would not be permitted to send you a file in that way either.

I can only suggest that you re install the complete game to refresh all of these files if the clear cache routine is not successfully doing that for you.
I have attached a Word.doc with complete step by step instructions.

Please reply to this email rather than generating a new email, this will avoid any confusion, it also enables us to read the history of all correspondence in order to provide you with quicker assistance and better support.

As you can see its printed in black and white. Again though Im not sure how true it is? as you say it might be a bit of scaremongering, suppose we will just have to wait and see.

I'm not sure what's given you that idea - it's completely untrue that the phasing out of Package Manager would prevent the installation of third party content distributed in rwp format, and in my view it's little more than guesswork and scaremongering to suggest that it is.

For all we know, RSC may be planning to replace the Package Manager with something a little less slow and clunky, but even if that's not the case, you can easily open a rwp file using unzipper programs like 7zip and install the content direct to your RS2013 installation.

This quick and easy method also has the distinct advantage of letting you see what is being installed and where.

No, its no guesswork and scaremongering, that would be the reply from RSC causing that. The 7zip method is know for opening .rwps but its hardly widespread knowledge, most use the package manager, and how would one go about creating .rwp files if the packager wasn't available? Rw-tools, sure, but that isn't widespread and is donationware.

Just look at how many users got confused after the packager got moved into utilities.exe and then the fact some users couldn't even get that .exe to even show up in there installation, yet expecting people to go through the method of 7zip or other means, hardly instill much confidence.

I also pointed out in my post they maybe phasing the existing packager out to not be reliant on MS frameworks which as you said is clunky and slow

The fact the official response from RSC is "its being phased out" and they are being silent on how installing of .rwps will be done in the future without forcing users to go through alternative 3rd party hoops is far more scaremongering than any suggestion of my last post is, infact the overall silence of the EULA enquiries which the other thread on this forum was trying to get the bottom of and now this hardly is going to give much confidence and seems to further give credit to the crowd who are being doom and gloom over the situation.

Quite frankly I'm not particularly bothered, but the intention of my last post was pointing out how it seemed supicious a support staff would be suggesting such things, especially after the screw up of "reskins = illegal" support response situation a few months ago, I would be taking the reply with a shovel full of salt, especially with this being the first instant of it popping up anywhere as the other usual places where such a topic would get discussed has not a peep about it.

Hi, It was a file that I was missing that evenually got righted in one on the steam updates .
