In no way will Quick drive satisfy you guys on this forum. In my estimation it is not being created with you guys in mind at all, so forget it!
Payware providers will still be in a job producing scenarios for those of you who want realistic period specific scenarios without creating them for yourselves. Those who like to create their own scenarios, and share them on UKTS, will still be doing so with the Scenario Editor.
Quick Drive will be an additional facility for those who take a fancy to it, just as the obtrusive HUD is there for those who like to use it to drive their trains. No one needs to use either of them if they don't want to.
I agree; I think those thinking it will feature "prototypical" rolling stock and real life time tables are living in cloud cuckoo land really. My guess is that a smattering of AI will feature, and this will probably mirror the chosen player train - e.g. pick a HST to drive and you will see HSTs as AI. It could be a bit more sophisticated than that, but I wouldn't expect it to be much more so.

The whole point of simulation is re-enacting real-life operations, so, breaking every rule in the book, completely disregarding the limits of the machine and driving like a lunatic in order to "win" is a major turn-off for every simulator user I know of.
Just because you don't like something does not make it a flop

I think Jimmy was alluding to realism, rather than having to go like stink between stops, in the hope you may just get in the slot. When have you ever seen a train racing?

Hell yeah!

I'd say most of us are trying to do just that already, though it'd be more accurate to say "what really can be done within the limitations of the program". Which is fine, btw, I'm not having a pop. In fact, knowing what those limitations are and working with them is one of the keys to getting satisfaction out of the scenario editor.

Would have to add, since the issue of commercial interests has been raised, that I don't understand why anyone would be prepared to pay for scenario's. Each to their own of course and there's obviously a market for them, but personally I just dont get it. Perhaps getting stung early on with the Black 5 scenario pack has soured me on the whole deal but I'm firmly in the freeware camp on this one.

Perhaps the pertinant question here is: will quick drive encourage more people to take the plunge and have a go for themselves with the scenario editor?

I'd say that Jimmyshand's on the money in his criticism of the driving technique that the scoring system encourages (forces?) users to adopt.

Flop or not? Depends on what the intention was I suppose. Recalling the fanfare that accompanied its introduction I'd have to say it was a flop. Thing is, if you're prepared to ignore the score and just treat them like any other drive then some of the career scenario's are actually quite good and enjoyable runs. And in all fairness there's something to be said for having target driven activities with realistic sucess or failure measures built in. So, overall its a nice idea but one that fell down on the execution, in my humble opinion.

Whether it is any good/realistic/challenging/insert your adjective of choice is different to it being popular though :grab:

Not sure how we could ever know one way or the other if its actually popular or not, but if the general ranking lists are anything to go by there's not that many people who bother playing the scenario's through to completion.

Besides, as Alcuin of York rather aptly put it "nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit."

Can we get off the topic of the popularity of career scenarios? I said nothing about popularity*, just that there were users who disparaged it before release and ended up being pleasantly surprised by it turning out to be good.

OK, that's enough.

It never ceases to amaze me how the vast majority of threads discussing new developments descend into acrimony because members simply cannot conduct themselves with courtesy towards other and a little self-discipline.

Let's get back on topic and avoid making disparaging personal remarks, please.

Hear, hear Ash. Lets not insult each other and discuss how good this feature is going to be.

Fodda wrote:As for Free Roam, I don't use it as one has to spend way too long in the map box trying to see if the path ends or not in a siding or wherever. Not so bad at 10mph, but an absolute nightmare when doing over 60 in a long heavy steam consist. So setting a start and end point would be a fantastic fix for that problem.
I tend to look for a start marker, look for an end marker, and make a quick timetable scenario to go from one to the other these days. I really don't want to have to set points everywhere either. Is this Quickdrive thing just an autopopulated free roam, or a random timetable or what? I have no idea how the MSTS one worked, I never used it.
Would also love to see TrackIR implented at some point soon too please. According to the manufacturers and the makers of the supported (and totally unconnected) Space Suttle sim, it only takes a couple of hours.
Never used my TIR in anything that wasn't supported, doesn't it have mouse emulation? I don't have drivers installed right now.

Which roughly translated means "but will it have third rail?" :D

I think the problem is that you need to hold a mouse button down when moving your head view in Railworks which isn't somthing the TrackIR mouse emulation handles. I may be wrong though and will have to have a good old look.

Railworks might be a little bizarre at times, but it hasn't quite reached the state of infinite improbability.
