Class 31 DLC not 2012 compatable

Post by jands1 »

Just downloaded from Railworks the class 33 and class 31.
Was very disappointed to find that the 31 is not 2012 compliant at least in so far as the rain/wipers effect. The 33 is fine. I understand that this may model have been originally produced before 2012 came along, but surely its a bit much to buy new kit from the game makers which doesn't function properly in the game. So far as I could see there was no warning or reduced price for this.
Have emailed them and if this was not downloaded software I would return it.
Wonder how "fitness for purpose" applies in this case
Nice model though effects apart...................

It moves, it hauls rolling stock---it's fit for it's purpose, and surely is functioning in game? Rain on windows and projecting headlights are cosmetic touches, and may be applied to the 31 if/when RSC see fit.

As the Class 31 was released in December 2010 and is advertised as a Railworks 2 DLC, I don't see how it could possibly be classed as not fit for purpose. Shiny lights and rain streaked windows are just eye-candy and do not stop the loco from being driveable.

As Gary says, the Class 31 IS RS2012 compliant as it works in the program, so let's not get too carried away here. What you mean, I think, is that it doesn't do exactly what you would like it to do, and which the advertising blurb doesn't actually claim it does - which is a different matter entirely to not being fit for purpose.

Hopefully, RSC may update this model in time.

I dont think the issue here is what I would like it to do but a question of reasonableness. If I buy a game and an add on I expect the add on to work with the game in most major respects and since adding rain effects etc was a lauded feature of 2012 in my view all current downloadable content should be fully compatable or carry a clear health warning which I do not think it does. Nor do I think that the web site makes it clear that some models are more compliant than others. Simply having a loco that goes and stops doesn't seem to me to be the point here but will be interesting to see what the consensus is.

This is what I see on the store page, which seems pretty clear to me

We've done this subject to death already and all we've managed to ascertain is that some want every model to have rain and lights, and want it right now....and some are happy that RSC have said that it might get done at some point. DLC that was released to work with RW2 and fulfills that criteria is a finished product, it'll still work in RW3 and if the absence of raindrops on the window really does offend a purchaser then until it gets tweaked they'll just have to drive it on sunny days 8)

In terms of foggy mornings picture where does this say its compliant - its actually says it needs RW3 to run which in fact it doesnt cos it runs on RW2 as well
My point is not that I care if it has the effects but that it should be clear whether it does or not when I buy it - which fankly it isn't. Also if we don't put some pressure on railworks they will not change things - they after all were the ones who "forced" rain effects on us - and I like driving in the rain.

does it have the TS2012 swoosh on the item in the store?

As you cannot buy RW2 now and anybody who had it should have automatically been upgraded to RW3, then it makes perfect sense for it to say that it requires RW3 does it not?

If it still said it requires RW2 to run, then no doubt we'd get somebody complaining that they want to drive the class 31, but cannot find RW2 in order to do so.

It is a similar situation to other programs. They are compatible with newer OS but may not take full advantage of new features built in to the OS.

Maybe if it stated on DLC that it don't have TS2012 features such as rain effect etc, then it would enable buyers to make an informed decision as whether to buy or not, just my opinion not demanding anything.

I agree with jands1 that it should be made a little clearer whether a model is TS2012 standard or an old RW model that will run happily in TS2012 but without the 'extra' effects.

There is the 'TS2012' swoosh but to the uninitiated that could mean anything. A footnote in the product decription stating that 'This model has not been upgraded to included the new and exciting TS2012 effects, although it will operate as normal in TS2012' wouldn't go amiss to avoid confusion.

****damn, well done Dave, beat me to it*****
For disclosure, I am affiliated with a third party developer however, I do not know anything about any future releases unless I'm working on them and even then, I'd be breaking years worth of built up trust to say anything about it ;-)

Its misleading for people that dont folow this forum .
They have heard about the rain effects and projected lights and supose that all thats available has this features.
Its only when you read these forums that you know that RSC thinks it has to do more important things than updating the locs or than updating the steam pages with correct information.

I agree that it should be more obvious to purchasers that it doesn't have the spanglies, even though it says Railworks 2. As has been stated people who aren't in the "know" could be mislead into thinking it has the goodies as is the case in the op's experience.
