Best Value DLC ?

If you only had the basic vanillha game (like me) And you wanted to buy 1 single DLC (or package) what one would you buy?

Which DLC(or package) Has the best value for money based on the ammount of content you get from it, such as loco's, rollingstock, route, scenarios etc.

I was looking at the Isle of White DLC as that adds 2 trains, a new route, and several scenarios for just £19.99 (On steam) whereas, for example, The Class 67 DLC adds just the loco and 2 rolling stock and some scenarios for £11.99, not quite half the price for less than half the extra content.

I would suggest WCML North. You get a very large route, a number of rolling stock items (HST with buffers, Class 86, Mark 3a coaches) and a decent bunch of scenarios.

But what you get with WCML North which you don't get with many other items is a whole world of extra possibilities. It is reasonably compatible with a good amount of default rolling stock, contains significant driving challenges (driving the Class 86, handling Beattock Summit with a British steam loco), provides a good environment for using a large variety of freeware rolling stock, has a huge possibility for scenario variety, has a quite large collection of freeware scenarios available and by now it's probably overtaken Isle of Wight as the most prominent asset requirement for freeware routes.

I have Isle of Wight as well, and while it is very well built, I must say it probably has the least replay value out of any add-on I've come across to date and I wouldn't consider it anywhere near the best value DLC I've bought. There's only so many times you can drive up and down a short single-track route with such a limitation on rolling stock types, and the scenario possibilities outside of what is already covered by the included scenarios are quite limited.

To add on most freeware routes use IOW objects so can get far more routes off here.

I agree with transadelaide WCML is a good choice and one of my fave routes but my suggestion would be the Settle to Carlisle route, it's built to the new standards, is very pretty and the additional content includes the class 66, 37,158, Jubilee and 4F.

Keep in mind WCML needs a reasonable PC to run it well. Some people have to turn settings down to run it. Settle to Carlisle from what i have read is much better on frames and as said, comes with quite a bit of older additional stock, a great way to get these items. Of course it also depends where your interests lie. Both great routes though.

Bear in mind steam tends to have summer sales in July. So I would hang fire for afew weeks to see if they have a sale and you'll get more for your money.

So the WCML DLC seems to be a popular anwser here. I'll wait 'n' see what we get in the summer sale if anything.

Am i right in thinking Railworks3 is going to be added to the Steam Workshop system in the near future?

That is the idea apparently - but don't forget each game using the workshop has a different implementation, so you don't know what you're going to get.

Suggestions for best value DLC very much depend on what you like...

To the OP, regarding rolling stock DLC, the most you get for your dosh are the various wagon packs from Fastline Simulation, for British routes, particularly the VDA Vans and ZCA sea urchin ballast wagons, they can be utilised on various UK routes from the 1960's up to the 2000's. over 100 different empty and loaded wagons from each pack all for about 3 quid each, excellent value for money.

Granfield/Class 111 hands down.
The class 111 MU, the 8F and the 02 for a bit of shunting and a route to run them all on. just for a tenner.

About the only downside of WCML-N is that some of the passenger runs can get boring after a while, if you're running an express run (it _is_ a long route).
Granfield is another great choice, although as a fictional route might not be everybody's cuppa tea.

Don't forget that in addition to the WCML (which is a great route) you would also need RSC's 390 add on and Just Trains Voyager to take advantage of the many free scenarios.

I also like the Portsmouth Direct line and the Victoria - Brighton line as these are more local to me

Another vote for the WCML_N. In terms of writing my own home-brew scenarios it's unparallelled.

I'm currently running 2 Hansen liveried Class 70's with a monster rake of Hanson JHA's towards coatbridge.

It's very versatile in terms of easy scenario creation as well - taking an existing one and adding another train and swooping the player unit around and messing with weather ect is simple which lends it'self to suggest that it's also a very very well created? written? produced? route as well.

If the sale comes out I'd also go for the Granfield as mentioned above.

I'd also vote for the WCMLN. It's a great route! It's from Glasgow Central to Calisle so if also buy S&C (Or download the exellent freeware 1960s version from here)some time later then you can make a two part scenario from Glasgow to Settle which could take a few hours to complete.
