Rail Maintenance Trains

Post by TheTazman »

I was thinking how good it would be if RSC were to introduce into the list of engines rail matnenance engines for mainline workings.

Any suggestions on which you guys would like to see... and I am also thinking any that make sparks etc for night workings.

Always been a bit surprised at the lack of on-track plant. If memory serves there's only the NMT, RHTT and a crane available.

I'm not sure it'd be much fun actually driving a tamper or rail-grinder though but yeah, they'd be great as clutter for scenario's. The grinder especially!

Perhaps the MPV is more along the lines of what you're thinking?

The MPV and tamper would be most prototypical for Scottish routes and yards.

I should have said too that maybe these type of engines would be AI only. But some will still want to drive them too.

Would a tamper not be most prototypical for any route or yard anywhere in the world?

I'm not sure that this makes any sense since I don't think there is any such thing as an AI only vehicle. You add vehicles for player, AI and static consists to the scenario in exactly the same way and a distinction is only made once you add the driver icons, well after the vehicles are added.

Perhaps what you meant to say was more along the lines of "if I used them when building a scenario, I would only use them as AI." Enforcing your choice on others who do want them to be visible in free roam scenarios or driven in a standard/timetabled scenarios is a very communist attitude.

Another thing that could be considered is making them as static scenery objects if the creator only wants them as clutter in sidings. Any need to worry about physics, controls, cab views, couplings, wheel animations etc wouldn't be an issue then, and might make the completion of this kind of object more accessible to a freeware modeller.

A RMT DLC pack for static and AI consists would be quite nice at the right price. I wouldn't be too interested driving 100miles in one, but I would certainly like to see a few passing or sitting in the right type of freight yard.

I agree with what has been said about added extras. If the pack was for AI use only then there would be no need for a cabview/fancy features. A few models with some sound would be just fine in my view.

I did make a start on a track laying machine that was around in the 70's,
but finding photos and info on them, on a £0 budget is a bit hard.
Well, that and a lack of talent :)

I guess a pack could be made similar to the Up The Junction one, with many types of Rail Maintenance Trains Available.

That's accurate in more ways than you might think. The UTJ pack was a personal project which got released as payware. For such a narrow niche market like this, that's probably the only way such a pack would ever make it to a stand-alone payware release.

If you read this thread there have already been several suggestions to our plethora of content creators out in Railworks land for suitable additional rolling stock, even if it was low poly static yard fillers, however, I appreciate that you all have day jobs, hobby time is limited and research and reference materials cost money out of your own pockets, so, we'll have to wait and see if any of these ideas will come into fruition and hit the UKTS library, or, not.

There is a Robel track machine somewhere, I think on a European site.

Yeah, it's on the German, Italian and Spanish RailSim websites I think. Do a search for Robel 54.22 Version:1.1.

And there's also the road-rail vehicle with the Altenburg - Wildau.

Hi,
The Robel is really nice but you need to download some cable reels and clutter and have the News container pack to fill up the otherwise empty wagons. All available from Rail-Sim.de and others I suspect too..
