Not enough speed with GWR King

Post by JLD95 »

Hello,

I have a problem with GWR King on carreer scenario "The Cornish Riveria Limited CS" / Oxford - Paddington. I finished the scenario with 4 minutes late: the speed of the GWR is not high enough :-?

On the first leg, with the reverser at 12%, the speed of the GWR reached 62,8 mph which I think is a good value.

However, on the rest of the route, the steam generation rate decreases and the speed decreases gradually around 50.3 mph: I can not arrive at Paddington at 4:45 p.m. but at around 4:49 p.m.

At present, I use the autmotic fireman.

Any suggestion to have a correct score ?

You have to fire the King yourself to get any kind of performance out of it. On automatic the fire mass is too small and the damper and blower are off by default. There's another thread about this where other tips have been given, such as setting the brake into one of the 'running' positions and putting the regulator to 100% as early as possible and working the reverser to set the speed. It's not as easy a drive as many other locos, that's for sure.

plenty of regulator (fully open) slowly reduce the cut off and keep putting coal on and it should go :D

hello,
thank you for your answers.

I used for the first time the expert settings without knowing the finer points:

I used: 100% regulator, 32% reverser, 11% brake, 100% rate coal and firebox opened, 100% injector1, 100% injector2, 100% dumper.

My speed is 66,5 mph and I arrive on time at Paddington.

However the boiler level is very low, the GWR could not travel a greater distance: how to increase the boiler level ? Even when the GRW is stopped, the level does not rise

Hi
Another thing to watch is the brake lever is back to front, which would slow you down big time

Haven't driven it for a while but I think the loco brake is on by default, a bit like the Flying Scotsman. I can get up to 75mph on the King.

Im having a play around with this and ive a suspicion the top speed is lowered by the drag coefficient thats been entered. Ill have a fun runs over the Badminton line and see if i can find something Im happier with. I may release that as a personal fix on UKTS depending on what luck I have with it.

Suffice to say about the comment made which I endorse (particularly the bit about manual fireman) you absolutely HAVE to ensure that the brakes are entirely off on this loco. 11 percent will not do, as you still might have a partical application. Going on memory I think the brake is either on or off, there is very little middle ground. So have it off, and make sure you turn off the ejector when they are released.

Lastly, the Centenary set is a bit overly draggy. So if you want what would be more realistic performance in service you may be well advised to try the Mk1s or perhaps that rather nice Clerestory set that was released last year.

Good to hear you are having a look at it Stuart - would love it if you were prepared to release any amended files for us to try.

By the way how are you going in saving up for a new PC so you can get the Wwestern rails running again!!

hi all having just run some tests with the King it would appear that the injectors are not working :o

I'm told that pouring some cold water over them may help...

I do have a new PC and have got WR running in the new graphics mode. To be honest ive done virtually nothing to it so far other than sort out Swindon West Junction to be a bit more realistic. Im also experimenting with various types colour to go around the 3d track (grey gravel just doesnt look right!) though Ive found some trackside bushes that make things look a bit better. Suffice to say I will wheel out one more version of it, but dont expect any more track .Its taking 2 minutes to save every track change I make.

Plewsey Re injectors do you mean the controls in the cab, or the keyboard controls?

Or it could be a lack of understanding of the way in which the injectors are used - so here's an explanation of the 'pouring cold water' comment a few posts ago.

There are two controls for each injector - a water switch (I & O) and a steam flow controller (K/Shift+K & L/Shift+L). You will need the injector on (usually only one needed at a time) and the flow to that injector activated at the same time. The way an injector works is that a steam flow (and some clever exploitation of simple fluid dynamics) is used to create suction which draws water into the boiler, the high pressure in the boiler meaning that you can't just open a hatch and pour it in. The higher the steam flow, the greater the suction effect and the faster the water is drawn in.

The injector rate required varies on a whole lot of things, but in general when cruising on level or gently sloped track you want things going so that steam production and usage is roughly the same and the boiler level is held steady or increasing slowly. If you're coasting downhill or braking for a station you will be using less steam, so it's an opportunity to push up the flow to get the boiler level up nice and high so you use steam for something useful instead of it venting out of the safety valve.

Conversely, if you know that a great big hill is coming up (for example the run from Lockerbie to Beattock on WCML-N, before the slope to Beattock Summit starts) then it's a good time to get the boiler level nice and high. When you hit the slope, a nice high boiler level means you can ease off on the injector flow (letting the boiler level slowly drop towards about 0.60) and use more of that steam on a higher regulator setting which will in turn make for a better run up the hill.

With the use of the manual firing controls, it is vitally important to have a rough knowledge of what is coming up in a few miles. The work of accelerating to cruising speed after a stop or ascending a big hill starts a few minutes before that point, as does managing to avoid wasting lots of water (and putting up with that horrible safety valve sound!) when coasting on a descent or braking for a station stop. This is key to some of the more interesting steam challenges like the Running on Empty scenario (Bath-Templecombe) or taking a steam loco up to Beattock Summit.

thank's for explanations about injectors and switch.
And about damper ? In this document (in french) http://www.activitysimulatorworld.net/L ... Vapeur.htm, it says "registre : principale alimentation en air primaire vers la chaudière (touche virgule , maj virgule ) à régler avec l'air secondaire (touche touche f , maj F ). Le plus dur à régler!!!" or English "Damper: main primary air supply to the boiler (comma key, maj comma) to settle with secondary air (key f key, F maj). The hardest to deal with!"

Do RW3 determines the color of smoke like MSTS ? How to adjust the damper and blower ?

No. I have run that scenario today on manual fireman and got to Paddington on time. Max. speed I could get was about 66mph.
