Couplings only

Post by justgeoff »

This is nothing to do with the update yesterday because this was happening before that and still is! I have created a scenario as a train-watching type rather than a driving type. Of about twenty trains that arrive and depart from the watching point perhaps three or four, and not always the same ones, appear as couplings only and with steam or diesel exhaust, and sound. When you see the couplings and exhaust and hear the train approaching I have to heighten the view point to 'helicopter type' and zoom down onto the train to make it visual, then regain the watching position.
Does anybody else experience this and have a remedy?

Thanks,

Geoff

Hello mate this is normally where the GEOPCDX file for the train is missing.Normally these are repaints of certain locos that require manual copying of certain files into folders due to copyright or similar. If they are repaints look in the read me files they will tell you which files to copy over etc. Good luck.BTW Make backups before you do anything you arent too sure about first

This has been with us (or at least with me) since day one of Rail Simulator. Even with standard stock on stardard route. Just stay long time not moving and sooner or later AI train made only of sound and levitating couplings will appear. Most of the time it seems that just moving will make train visible. So this can not be repaint issue.

Latest repeatable case for me was Horseshoe Curve train spotting scenario, can't remember scenario name just now. If I do nothing, and I meen nothing, never touch mouse or keyboard, and one of AI trains will appear couplings only. Maybe I should test this again to see if this is still happening.

Yeah, this has been happening since day 1 for me - usually it was JT's Voyager being guilty, but I've had it with most types of stock eventually. Just switching camera briefly usually loads the models, but it's pretty irritating when it messes up your scenario.
My posts are my opinion, and should be read as such.

Hi Guys,

Thanks Doncaster40 but GEOPCDX files are not the issue in this instance. Asfimja and Kariban have hit on the same problem and as this is a 'trainwatching from the platform' scenario, I will have to do what I used to do as a lad and run from one end of the platform to the other, or up and over the footbridge to another platform!
Not forgetting, of course, when it's a bit quiet, to get my name stamped out on one of those platform vending machines, or get a bar of Nestles Chocolate that you put in your pocket and forget till it's too soft to eat! Happy Days! And thanks for your help.

I've also seen the same issue, and it has happened on a number of tests of an activity I've done for WCML N, but I've seen it very occasionally in others.

The scenario also suffered jellycab and was in the rain, which I rather suspect is linked to this phenomenon. The frequency of occurence seemed to be linked to settings and also the length of the train.

If you move the camera, the train does sometimes appear.

Hi,
I've seen this more than a few times.
An invisible AI train approaching.. apart from the couplings or was it vacuum hoses - can't be too certain.
I changed views to an external one and saw the trains' Cloak of Invisibilty lifted :-)
So I can only guess that it's a temporary failure of textures failing to load. I have the luxury of a high end machine with oodles of everything. Wouldn't know a technical explanation but if you see it, save the scenario, come out of the game, reload the saved scenario and you'll probably see the train this time. As it's only a temporary glitch I've never worried about it. Having 20 years flightsim experiences I've come to accept 'Stuff' Happens 8)

Core Updates are Really Scary !

Best Wishes,

I get it now and again, and switching cameras certainly helps, you can usually hear the train before you see the couplings go by and that's the time to switch cameras.
Can also switch to the 2D map to see where and when the next train is about to pass you.

This bug has been around since the original Railsimulator, and has been discussed many times. I wish I could find the last thread that covered this because someone offered up a plausible explanation for why this happens. It apparently has something to do with the distance between the location where the AI unit begins moving and the then current location of the player. It's because of this distance that for some reason the AI unit's textures don't fully load.

As you get reasonably close to the AI unit (1-2 miles) hop out of your cab (8 key) and fly to it. Then hop back into your cab and you should then see it in all its glory as it passes you.

I'm sure this has been reported to RSC hundreds of times, but for sure it's not near the top of their "must fix" list.

I couldn't work out if it was the distance it was away, or the time you're stood still waiting for it to pass?
