I usually just copy the whole Steam folder, all 33 gb. You can copy just the Railworks folder for a quicker more targeted approach or if you are more sure of what you are doing then just the Assets Folder and the Content Folder and for creators, the Source Folder as well.Drfisher asked what I guess many of us, myself included is. What is the best and quickest way of backing up? Some I guess just lurk and hope someone will stick their head above and wait to be shot down. So now there is two of us waiting and hoping

Re: Railworks core updates!
With this update, RSC are advising us to backup or files. Who does this actually apply to? Would It apply to me who just builds routes? Or Is It for asset creators or something like that? I'm debating whether to back up or not since I didn't last time and everything was still there afterwards.
Thanks,

If you are a creator of any sort, you should be making regular backups anyway.Trainmadcon wrote:With this update, RSC are advising us to backup or files. Who does this actually apply to? Re: Railworks core updates!
Adding positively and helping on this thread would be good
There are people on here that have a great deal more time I guess than I do or organisational skills when it comes to RW3, and also know how around a computer. I have a basic knowledge but if there is not a simple way of backing things up and recommended certain things.
Quite simply, if you are making changes to core software, then the onus is on you to sort out what you have and where you got it from. If you have installed multiple files here, there and everywhere, then you should really have made a note of these changes and/or made a seperate folder structure that could be copied/pasted in after any update.bri2808 wrote:Drfisher asked what I guess many of us, myself included is. I am an end user... And I only add patches that are recommended. I do see somewhere that if an update is carried out then it will need to either be backed up or redownloaded. All I, and I guess the OP are asking is can we copy a specific folder and back it up, as I did for example for the recent 390 update.Darpor wrote:As for what is the best way to back up? Entirely depends on what you need to back up. Are you an end user or creator or both?

Well looking forward to the release of the core update.
Some of the new things sound very promising overal.
Also completely off topic, currently waiting on Steam to download the High Res textures for Skyrim

My only bugbear with rs.com is a perceived lack of information. What bugs are they working on and is there an ETA on any of them?
But bring it on and let's see what's what!

Now, protecting yourself against Skidrows cracks sounds like a very wise idea but what the heck has that got to do with train simulation??

Re: Railworks core updates!
If you've stumbled onto torrent / warez sites / Usenet and /or keep up with copyright & piracy news, you'll know that SkidROW is a piracy release group whom specialise in game releases, as with most pirated stuff be it films, music, games, etc.. it always originates from a release group.
Anyway, IMO the best way to deal with the upgrade and are not worried about losing everything (i.e you want to start afresh), then I tend to first have a 'Steam Backup' (one created by the Steam Application, via the right click scripts), then delete the entire Railworks (TS2012) installation. Manually cleaning up any folders that the original Railworks installation doesn't know about (usually freeware folders / items downloaded via places such as here) and then reinstalling via the 'Steam Backup' .exe
Finally a "Verify Cache" to make sure that everything "Default" / DLC from Steam is present and correct, before adding DLC other payware items from non-Steam sources.

Oh, believe me, it still has flaws. Huge flaws, in my personal opinion, and I will be surprised if it's any better tomorrow. But the proof of the pudding will, of course, be in the chompingjimmyshand wrote:If you've paid 3 grand for a NASA PC then you've every right to be irked if the game still has flaws at that spec!

Re: Railworks core updates!
I am glad to see they have got round to fixing the bridge lofts, but as I posted in the other thread the list is relatively unexciting unless there are other as yet undocumented effects.
No real changes to the core - physics, AI and signalling - evident nor is there anything to say the various save/load bugs have been addressed. What about the clock discrepancies that some have reported?
As Ruth mentioned, there are a ton of things those of us who delve more deeply into the editor would like to see fixed, such as the selection tool for lofts being off centre, the disappearing-track-after-laying syndrome and the instant SBHH after placing a fresh piece of track on a bad end. I guess those are not high on the priority list when it comes to appeasing the Facebook mob and didn't Paul Jackson as much as say that a few months ago anyway?
I won't be taking any particular precautions - the desktop still has pretty much only default + DLC running after last weekends PC refurbishment (mis)adventures and none of my WIP routes on the laptop are sufficiently advanced to cause more than a philisophical shrug of the shoulders, if they get trashed.
