That one's very small - by American standards! Should make it interesting to see what traffic it gets used for.

For the first U.S. steam developed by RSC no other should have been done. This is THE one. Absolutely beautiful lengendary locomotive. They tried replacing her but couldn't.

For those unfamiliar. This engine was a pure passenger engine. Lasted from 1914 till the end of the steam era.

Two still exist. One pretty much stripped and in a preserved state of neglect, and the one shown in the video now sits in pieces in a roundhouse in PA.

First few seconds of video are messes up.

Coo! Nice :)

Anyone else see shades of Stanier's Princess Royal in this?

Anyway, nice whistle :D

There are a number of *much* longer vids on YT, incidentally.

Cheers, Rik.

Heh, whistles seem to be interchangeable accessories for US steam ( diesels too come to think of it ). Would be fun to have a selection.

Interesting choice, I wonder if they'll bow to popular demand & do a Duplex at some point. Doesn't seem to be all that much preserved US steam to choose from.

There is plenty and Adam was at the very place that houses a decent chunk of it. That is why we have a GG1 and soon a K4s

A quick look at my copy of La Locomotive a Vapeur shows that Chapelon seemed more interested in the K5 than the K4. However, vital statistics for the K4 are given and make an eye-opening contrast to British and European practice.

PRR K4: 2 cylinders 686x711mm, superheated, 14.35 bar, 2.032m driving wheels, adhesive weight 92.2t, grate area 6.42m^2.

LNER A3: 3 cylinders 482x660mm, superheated, 15.4 bar, 2.032m driving wheels, adhesive weight 67t, grate area 3.84m^2. The LMS "Duchess" is only slightly larger.

So the K4 has almost as much adhesion as a six-axle diesel in British practice, and almost twice as big a firebox (as is very visible in any picture) as the LNER's finest. And this is on the small side for America.

Yikes.

An obvious choice I would think?
The K4 is legendary, with railfans and modellers alike. :P
110 percent passenger locomotive, perfick
( and I don't model the PRR, but I wouldn't say no to one. :-? )
O scale brass of course. :-? :P

Chris.

Not exactly what you would call small. :-?

Since the PRR had often referred to itself as the Standard Railroad of the World, the K4 has sometimes been referred to as the Standard Passenger Locomotive of the World. The K4s design was successful enough that it influenced other locomotive designs, and not only those of other PRR locomotives. London and North Eastern Railway Chief Mechanical Engineer Nigel Gresley incorporated much of the boiler design (including the tapered shape) into his famous Class A1 Pacific. " Not bad for an "old choo-choo".
