Is anyone out there running the Sims 3 on a higher performance machine and is it working?
Kind regards James.

I have had many problems getting the sim3 working recently and it took many reinstalls of it on a ati 4750. I was getting grapics corruption and continual launcher crashes. It has sorted it self out now but it gave me a headache trying to fix it.

I dont have a link but I have on my pc the user folders defaulting to a different drive other my 80gb ssd. You could try doing a google or bing search on moving the user folders, it wasnt too difficult when I found the right info.

The other suggestion is to do a search on microsofts web site for the info.

Hope this helps

Hi John,
Thanks for your post. Have not heard from you for a while. I hope you are keeping well.
I managed to move the Documents folder by just changing the Drive letter in the location box from C to D and clicked apply.I did not create a new folder on the SSD drive as done in the Video so maybe I have done it wrongly. It is now on my SSD with the user James being the same. It is no longer on my C drive so it has moved. The Sims 3 is seeing it or I wouldn't be able to play the old Lots I have.
I have managed to get all the files on my SSD now but it still stutters. So it is not a Drive issue. My problem is that all my Expansion packs are Downloads so I can't keep re-installing too many times. It takes ages and eats into my download limit. I have never had any problems on my old Machine at all so logically it is something on this new Machine that The Sims 3 does not like. I think !!!
Finding that out is another matter. EA Support are trying their best to help me.
I have no Launcher problems or graphical distortion just the stop and start as you are moving along and around a Lot or following a Sim.
Kind regards James.

Hi James,

Yes I havent been around for a while due to various health issues. Yes I have seen the problem you describe as well and it is a difficult thing to sort out. You could try running it at a lower resolution and adjusting some of the graphics settings to try and find a workable solution for you. But some of the recent expansion packs seemed to stuff it up a bit as it was fine until installing the latter ones though the most recent one seems ( pets ) seemes to have helped some

also here is a microsoft link on moving user folders

Thanks John for that information. I hope your are feeling a little better. I have quite a number of health problems which can make life quite difficult at times so I know where you are coming from.
I just can't understand why the game worked without problem on my old Machine yet on this much better one it is a mess. The monitor being a 16:9 gives me little choice with the resolution apart from one setting marked as 16:9 but isn't and leave gaps and is distorted so I have to go with full HD. I have managed to get a free Voucher from EA because of they ignored my email for 4 days.
Kind regards James.

James, are you still running those beta drivers for the gpu?
Did you install the latest drivers and find they didn't work, or were they installed when you received the system?

Hi John,
Yes I was referring to the in game resolution. EA don't seem to have realised that the 16:9 Aspect Ratio is becoming more dominant that the older 16:10 relating to Monitors.
gptech I did have the latest WHQL Drivers 285.62 installed but they caused major problems with Media Centre and Skype Video which has been acknowledged but not fixed yet. The Beta driver is the one that works with Media Centre but does not cause a problem with Railworks as apparently the Driver before this Beta did. So I am between a Rock and Hard Place here. I am still looking at the next WHQL down from the latest but am not sure if this was the one listed somewhere on these Forums as another problem causer. I have never been a fan of constantly upping Drivers as often the original ones that came with the NVidia GPU Disc are often the best.
The Sims 3 performance with 285.62 was exactly the same so I do not think it is a GPU Driver issue. I believe this is a Program issue in relation to something on this new Machine that was not on the old one. Getting everything on the SSD Drive has proven it is not a Drive Problem. It seems to be a case of maybe sacrificing The Sims 3 over Railworks which runs beyond my expectations in TSX Mode on this machine. I am also wondering if it is a DirectX issue as all three games I have ATM install DirectX 9. I would presume that the latest version would be installed by at least Railworks 3 and the others would not overwrite this. PHysX is now of course the NVidia version which was not on my old machine with Railworks 2 installed.
The Sims 3 is a break really when I am tired of Route Building so it is important in that respect.
I have never had a problem with any of the Sims Programs on any other computer before and I was expecting this one to eat it for Breakfast. The game settings are the same as they where on my old machine ATM. I did not up them all for this new Machine. I have yet to receive a reply from EA support on the last lot of extensive information I gave them. Thanks for your help on this somewhat off Topic discussion. If the Moderators feel the need to move it or ask me to restart a another Topic somewhere else I will take advice. Unfortunately no other Forums including the EA ones seem to have the technical knowhow that you experience on uktrainsim.
Puzzled.
Kind regards James.

James, you would be amazed at the number of users having performance as well as other problems with the sims 3 if you do a search. There is lots of sites with suggestions for solving problems, some work, some dont. If you want to pm me I might be able to suggest a possible way to help you if you but only if you are comfortable with it.

Anyway I dont think it has anything to do with your new setup but more of a sims 3 problem.

regards

John

Hi John and thanks for your reply. I am coming to a similar conclusion myself. This Machine is running better than any I have ever owned. All other Programs are functioning correctly and all Games running at max.
Kind regards James.

Just been checking my Page File size on the C Drive it is about 16 Gigs on a I tb Drive. Would reducing this enable more of the 16 Gig of Ram I have to be used. The SSD has no Page File. EA have suggested a Clean Boot to try and Identify the problem.

The pagefile is not used if everything will already fit in RAM. There is therefore no benefit to making it smaller, as long as you are not short of disk space.

Just done a Clean Boot and disabled Norton and the result with The Sims 3 is the same. Therefore it must be Hardware Problem The Stutter occurs when my C Drive light flashes (However it passes the WD Diagnostic full Test) or a Windows Installation Problem or a Sims 3 problem. According to the MOBO Manual the one short Beep at Startup indicates 1. VGA detected or Quick Boot set to disabled or No keyboard Detected. The Message that flashes up for less than a second after the Beep has the word Drive in it and that is the only thing I can clearly see.
Puzzled again.

A single short beep at startup is perfectly normal - every PC BIOS I've seen in the past 20 years uses it to mean "POST completed, everything is fine". More than one beep, or a long one, would be worth investigating.
