Big FPS boost!

Post by Ximmy »

Wow! Gone from lowish settings struggling to get above 25FPS to everything at max (bar shadows they are off) and 50FPS
Just by running it in a window!
To explain I have a big (27") monitor with a stupid high ( 2500ish x 1400ish) resolution lowering the full screen res just makes it look horrible. Running at 1280 x 700ish in a window looks fine and dandy and runs like a dream. I also set my desktop background to pure black to avoid it distracting me. A point on shadows - i dont like em - its not just railworks but i find shadows in most games dont please me so i almost always turn em off.
If you have a big monitor itd worth a try.

I too found going out of full screen and running at 1440 x 900 or less gives greater frame rate.

Interesting, I might try this. Just how small is the window in relation to the entire screen half, 2 thirds? I've got a 23 inch 1080 HD TV that I use as a monitor so it's not the biggest in the world.

Fantastic advice!!

Tried this today and I'm getting around 40fps with Anisotropic x8, SSAA 2x2, Settings High, TSX Enabled and a Resolution of 1280x768

If you turn antialiasing off, you should be able to run at a higher resolution with no other compromises.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.

I'm going to try this when I get home later. Double the fps sounds like a major leap in performance and could be a breakthrough for people struggling with WCMLN like me! Will report back later, the more people that can confirm this the better I think.

Well, I certainly don't get double the performance. I run the fire in the tower scenario (demanding for my system) at max of 30 (I have it locked) and low of right at 15 in full screen. I can bump that a few FPS by running it in windowed mode. But that's all I can get.

Alas, didn't work at all, if anything was worse. I set windowed mode, res 1280 x 720, settings pretty low and I couldn't register above 14 fps and SBHH in the usual places. Put it back to full screen res 1400 x 900 and settings to medium and got 17fps!!!! Work that out? Real close to giving up on WCMLN.

I have also tried this, at 1280x768 with Anistrophic x8 and MLAA + MSAAX8. Everything else is on full and I to, see no difference. Maybe that's because I need to lower some other settings though. I thought I had good spec,

nobody felt like asking the original poster what his system specs were. I cant imagine that this would help lower spec systems. in fact usually running games in full screen mode causes the system to focus more resources on that application. It was always worse to run the game in windowed mode for me.

27" IMac :D
obviously via bootcamp
I7 3.4 ghz sandy bridge jobby
8gigs ram
1gig ATI graphics card
Win7 64bit
I think the graphics card is struggling with railworks on the stupid high res of the IMac although it doesnt really struggle with anything else but railworks is the only thing I have on my little windows partition.
To the guy who asked - it is exactly 1\2 of my native res but it looks like it fills more than half the screen (though obviously it doesnt).
Really made a difference for me running updated WCML at over 30 fps though I now have it capped at 30 for smoothness.
Also I told a lie  everything on the ingame settings is at max (bar shadows) but on the launcher im 8x antsoptric and two notches of AA.
at full screen res i was 17FPS with in game low to med and bilinear and no AA.

Have you the number of the graphics card?

Otherwise I'm surprised that setup would not play it well before.

I'll try altering my settings.

Thanks

May be useful to knw that in Flightsim X I've seen a similar comment that FPS rates are higher in windowed mode, that certainly worked for me in FSX.

I have that in windowed mode and exapnded to the full screen so has little effect overall.

I must admit, I have everything on the highest settings available except viewing distance and no shadows. The shadows at any level is the real killer, I then get no higher than 14fps and very stuttery.
