Scenario Editor - bit harsh don't you think!

Post by alanrco »

I've only had TS2012 for a week. Got the 4MT add-on and enjoyed the route so much so I thought I'd make a return journey scenario form Bath Green Park to Templecombe. Never used the editor before and the pdf file relates only to Railworks 2. Placed an engine and added a coach and thought I'd save it there. So I exited choosing run and it failed. What's more, all the scenarios fail for that route now. Since when, building a new scenario fail the whole route for all other scenarios? that's just plain bonkers! I'd bult a few scenarios in MSTS with no problem at all. This really sucks!

The same principles remain.

Was this a "standard" type scenario. If so, it will fail if you didn't give it any instructions. If you just want to place something and drive, free roam is what you want.

Ah, the good old comparison with software over a decade old. I have had extensive experience with the MSTS activity editor and once you have taken the time to learn, the RW scenario editor is more user friendly, especially since the introduction of the timetable editor.

It can't be that bad though surely? If it was that bad, there wouldn't be hundreds of scenarios available for download. Or maybe they suck too?

By all means, ask for help, there are dozens of users here with extensive experience that can give the help you seem to require. However, this is the "Help for Beginners" section and I did not see any request for help, merely a rant from someone who has used TS2012 for a week and seemingly expected it to work "just like MSTS".

Thanks for your replies. I apologise for the rant. I just do not understand how attempting to create a scenario should mess with the route. I expected that an activity would make no changes to the route or other scenarios for that route. If I screwed up on building a scenario then surely choosing another (original) scenario on the same route later to run should not fail, should it?

You might like to take a look in the FAQ section above this one.
There's lots of helpful articles relating to scenario writing, and as Darren has pointed out, the scenario editor is much more user friendly.
You will of course, need to put a bit of time into learning the basics and as you learn more and more, scenario writing will be much more rewarding.

As you rightly say, altering one scenario should not alter any other scenario for the same route. That is correct, it will not, each scenario is separate in a separate folder, so changing one will not change another.

That said, if you happen to, for instance, break a set of points or accidentally delete a signal, while installing the rolling stock for your new scenario, then that might well break the route.

I'm not arguing (just explaining why I'm right).

Does your route open in route editor?
If so check where you placed the consists for damage to tracks etc
if it does not then it looks like you have a route problem which should not (in theory) happen from a scenario creation.
If the route is OK see if your new scenario is listed in the scenario editor listing and delete it
If this still doesn't work I would reinstall and then..............always always always back up regularly - I nearly always save a copy of my key routes before I do any mods at all - imo you can't back up to often

RW3 is powerful, but not intuitive and you do have to persevere especially if you want to do clever shunting or passing movements.
