A Clean re-install or....?

Post by kevpotts »

Waiting for the new machine to be delivered next week:

Intel i7-2600 3.40Ghz. 8mb
Nvidia GTX 560 Ti 1.25Gb. DDR5
8Mb DDR3 1333MHz
2Tb drive

Meanwhile, enjoying some of the features of RW3 on the old setup. So much so, that I think the lads at RSC deserve a bit of credit and £££ so have ordered a boxed copy of RW3 too. Question: When the newer machine is set up, do I just log into Steam and assume it'll download RW3 for me since it knows I own my original/upgraded copy and addons? Or should I install from the new disc (thereby also getting Horshoe Curve) and then log on to hopefully get the remainder of my previously purchased addons delivered?

Perhaps someone who knows more will chime in but I am not sure if you will be able to use that key in the way you hope as steam could well say that you already own the game and not allow you to link that key to your original account.

If you can I would cancel the order until you know for sure.

When you take delivery of your new PC, and its up and running , first thing you MUST do is make sure your email account is setup, (you are going to need it for steam ) as its a new PC and a new install of the steam software , You will be sent a security code by email ,( extra security that steam implemented a few months back ) you need to then input this code ( i had to do do it twice ) into steam ( its easy , and self explanatory ) Once this is done, and after a rebbot of the Machine , Log into steam and it will download all of your purchases for you ,

No need to buy the boxed version , (although you could install it on another machine ) but you would need to buy any add-ons Twice i think ...(hmm not sure about the last comment , someone else may know )................Your Call

Hope that helps

Cheers

No, this comment is likely to lead people down the garden path. Steam links software subscriptions to the user, not to the computer. If you have already got a subscription to any game (and DLC) added to your Steam account then you can install that game on any computer on which you are logged into the Steam Client, but you may be logged in on only one computer at any time because it's your subscription for your use only. Steam will not add a duplicate of an item you already have, because multiple copies in a cloud-based distribution system just don't make sense. Any DLC purchased from the Steam Store is treated as an integral part of your account's installation of that game, so there is no need to purchase new subscriptions to items to which you've already subscribed.

An extra copy can be used to install on a separate Steam account, but be warned that creating an extra account for the same person is a breach of the Steam Subscriber Agreement (which you've already agreed to if you have a Steam account) which may lead to your account being terminated without notice as per the terms of that Agreement. You can use it on a new account for somebody else in your household, but be aware that any DLC you have subscribed to will not be a part of their subscription.

Why not just purchase a subscription to the new route?

Well, as stated, I thought I'd give the team some £££ back for their efforts. I think RW3 is effectively a new game and we've already enjoyed one other major free upgrade. I could have just bought the route but it seemed a good opportunity to get a hard backup base copy - hopefully without losing the considerable investment I've made in addons!
