It probably is CPU. Railworks doesn't make good use of multi-core CPUs, so performance is limited mostly by the speed of a single core - particularly if you're seeing drops in areas with lots of objects, and as your GPU usage is comfortably below 100%.

I've generally got my system well-balanced now, sitting on a 30 fps limiter much of the time with occasional drops to the low 20s; but I've found that the yard at Barstow drops it onto the 14 fps 'floor', with dozens of sidings to calculate and render.

It's just one of those things: you have to find your own balance between pretty graphics, and a decent fps even in the heaviest locations. See the link I posted above, then experiment by changing one thing at a time to see what affects your results most (and post back here so we can share the knowledge :) ).

Good luck!

Ah, there speaks someone after my own heart! :D

I'll quite happily judder my way out of Paddington if it means I get to enjoy WCML in all it's absolute glory (though this is no guarantee that I won't whine about it periodically).

I've done a search but cannot find anything definitive anywhere; as a rule, is it true to say that the higher the graphical settings are put, would have a detrimental effect on the amount of scenery pop-in you will encounter, or is this not necessarily the case?

I've done a lot of experimentation with FX, MSAA and SSAA as I should think we all have, but I still get scenery "popping-in" now and again in the distance which is a little distracting. The basic settings I use are "max everything" except Passenger Density <Low>, and Shadows <High>, and Water Detail <Very High>.

System is i7 920 @3.8GHz, 12GB DDR3, 2GB HD6950, and OS/W7 64bit and Steam on a 128GB Crucial M4 SSD.

Essentially, is distant scenery pop-in a thing we all have to accept no matter how good your system? Can it (is it?) be affected by game settings? Could it be eliminated altogether if (for instance) I acquired another SSD and put the Steam folder exclusively onto it?

Any thoughts?

Probably, it's a fair assumption that the more work you give it to do, the harder it'll find it, and something has to give.

It would seem to be down to how the game engine handles loading of scenery, I doubt that adding another SSD would eliminate it--plenty of reports in here that whilst an SSD does speed loading of routes there's little improvement in game play. I believe these observations come from those using an SSD as a fast drive though, whether using one as a cache would be different is open to conjecture.

It's unfortunate that the game doesn't have the same under-the-bonnet config tweaking of Microsoft FSX. This too can suffer popping scenery, but with the right combination of tweaks to memory and rendering settings, it can be reduced to the point of being unnoticeable and tailored specifically to the memory capacity of individual players' graphics memory and CPU combination. Railworks has a much more "all on" or "all off" approach. I have a fairly high end system with SSD but whilst it has improved frame rates overall, it's not made any real difference to the rendering issues.

OK, thanks for your quick replies. I'll save my cash for the time being then as I've got plenty of free space on my existing SSD!

I'm still experimenting myself with forcing V sync and triple buffering through D3DOverrider and seeing what I can get away with FPS wise. Seems to be SSAA 1x2 runs well and is as smooth as RW is going to get, for me.

It would be great if, in the not too distant future or perhaps a new incarnation of RW they consider the progress recent PC hardware has made and perhaps factor this in. Always a case of striking a balance I guess, such a huge gulf between low/mid and higher spec systems and trying to encompass everyone's requirements.

Not to mention ensuring any work done on the core game is commercially viable.

Assuming you have detail distance set to full, your bound by the engine.
To my knowledge theres no .cfg or .ini file that can change the LOD (level of detail).
Basically, in order to be somewhat effiecent, an object is usually given 3 or 4 LOD models. So for each object, theres in fact 4 objects drawn dependent on their distance from the viewer/driver but as to where the first LOD model is drawn depends on the engine (and in this case it can be quite short).
For landscapes, which maybe rendered differently, some games do allow this to be altered as well - by increasing the drawing distance by x meters. Again, Railworks doesn't have a config file for this. So if your max drawing detail is at max, then thats that - sadly.

Evening everyone,

Apologies are tendered if this has been asked before, but, would an ATI Radeon 6670 graphics card (with 2GB of ram) be acceptable to run in TSX mode? I'm not particularly interested in running at the highest settings, just an acceptable compromise. Failing that, what are users' opinions of the 6950 and GTX560 cards?

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Game runs great on a 6970 (I turn off shadows) so the 6950 should be a very good card for this game imo.

Thank you - I apologise for not posting earlier, but I ended up buying a 2gb GTX550, which seems to work perfectly :).

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Hi,

I have just got a new computer (spec below) and need help setting up Train Sim 2013. I don't really know the first thing about changing graphics card settings in the nvidia panel/the game. Is anyone able to offer a 'step by step' on how best to configure the settings for the game. At the moment, the game doesn't have any stuttering problems but doesn't look very sharp and things are a bit flickering.

Hope that makes sense, thanks for any help you can give!

Cheers,
Rich
