Well as a photographer/photographic technician for most of my life who also comes from the "Hi-Fi" generation I for one resent having to pay for a lousy camera, storage for x zillion MP3's and an FM radio that never works all bundled into a mobile phone that now also tries to be a laptop/pda etc.etc. etc. ALL of this only reasonably available if you tie into some ludicrous contract that will far exceed my usage of a mobile and locked to ONE company. Add to that the fact that the advertised "coverage" of most providers is more like a wish list fantasy than a practical reality and you can see that I'm not a huge fan of "the cult of the mobile".

HOWEVER the mobile phone is undoubtedly an excellent tool. The few who still don't see the point or have minimal use for them may actually find the following useful.

People like me who want A MOBILE PHONE.... With GOOD BATTERY LIFE.... LONG STANDBY TIME.... GOOD coverage FULL STOP! May be interested in this?

An article in The Sunday Times, rather patronisingly referred to this as being launched aimed at the Third World. Patronisingly, IMHO, because they seem to have missed the point that WE are now the 3rd World, whilst India where this is currently launched is actually, along with China, far more booming at the moment than we are! To be fair they then point out that this has features that will attract many in the UK and Europe where it says it will be launched later this month.

The Nokia 101 twin sim phone with 35 days standby, estimated to market at £22. Those of you with £400 phones might want to buy one if venturing somewhere dodgy? When you're mugged for your £400 phone you can call the police on the £22 one? Buy it pink and only your children will want it anyway? I do appreciate that a vast % of the population will think I'm nuts?!:lol: ....but those who "Get" what I'm on about will doubtless be pleased to see that at last their needs are catered for?
Anyway looks good to me? Had to pay 4x as much for my current triband sim free NO FEATURES Nokia.

BTW If you still don't get the twin Sim bit? How many times have you been somewhere on Holiday where only one persons network got a signal? In Dorset on the coast, at least two networks will pop up with "Welcome to France" greetings if you have your phone on automatic ...and that could cause some costly calls for those who miss it.

Quite agree Geoff.

I want a mobile phone that I can make phone calls on and send or more likely receive text messages. Don't need an MP3 player - I have the car radio with the CD autochanger somewhere behind me. Don't need a camera - got a nice little Sony digital one that works just fine.

They gave me a Blackberry in work and it was great. Turn on the GPS and install Google Maps / Latitude and my wife can see when to put the dinner on when I am coming home on a Friday. Great until Google + launches and our company proxy servers get the Google login page classed as a Social Network site so I can't login to Latitude any more

Oddly enough, I regularly carry two phones around - my iPhone 3G and an ancient Nokia 3310. The latter's battery (not the original, but a third-party Li-Ion replacement) lasts all week on standby, making it an ideal emergency phone. I keep a prepaid SIM from the UK in it, so I also get slightly cheaper calls and texts when I go back there - and more to the point, people can call me without having to dial an international number.

Yeah. Small silen PCs that overheat, and underclock the CPU. i know the ones.

Nothing sounds more satisfying than a gaming PC running with max fan speed. Mine sounds like a VP185!

No worries! It was just a bit of humour. Not the meaning of life!!!

Lets be straight here. It's about choice? You want a tablet? Fine. I'd rather have a laptop. I want a phone to be good at being a phone. Some folk just love the extra gizmo's and apps and that's fine...... as long as I can get a good reliable phone.

I guess my real point is that the consumer ought to be leading the market rather than being "lead to market"?!

BTW since this started some friends just returned from doing the second part of the "Coast to Coast" walk and report that 3G is virtually non existant and 2G pretty awful too. Not much point in 4G then really. In military terms the first rule is "secure the bridgehead and never over extend your supply lines"? In telecoms it seems to be charge into .......er nothing?

I've got numerous gadgets that, on their own outperform their associated functions within my phone. However, I don't see your point. To carry everything my phone does in their respective physical formats would not only take up a rucksack in itself, but would be ludicrously convoluted.

If I know I'm on a long journey, I'll bring my Kindle to read. If I know I'm hitting the gym I'll bring my iPod. If I want to play games on the go I'll grab the DS. If I want to go shooting snaps I'll bring the camera. But the point is if I'm caught without any of those, I have an alternative that I'll always have on me as it's my primary means of communication. The convenience far outweighs any shortcomings that result from it not being a solitary purpose device.

If you're just after a phone, then something like that is perfect. The reason people buy into more feature-filled phones, and the reason that companies make so much money selling them, is because they're not just after a phone. The phone itself is a feature just like any of the many others bundled on the hardware.

Indeed - I have a PC - it's great for proper browsing; spreadsheets; simming etc.
I have a tablet - it's great for quickly looking something up from the comfort of the sofa; providing a decent sized GPS screen
I have a mobile - it's great for making phone calls; sending txts
I have a mp3 player - it's great for playing music.
I have a camera - it's pretty good at taking photos.

Yes - my tablet can do all of these; but it is bulky to use as a phone - the sound quality isn't quite as good - the camera is lower resolution. The screen is smaller (7 inch as opposed to 21 inch).

Yes I like gadgets. However I do believe that a phone should be just that - a phone. Mine lasts at least a week without having to recharge the battery - unlike my tablet which requires charging every few days depending on usage.

What some of you "don't get", I suspect, is that so called technical innovations are 100% marketing ploys and 1-5% actual technical improvement (if any?). Don't get me wrong I love technology BUT I'm very critical about what is actually a step forward. In my book technology has to be my slave. I'm never going to be a slave to it. Your all singing all dancing phones demand YOUR attention to recharge them every 24 hours. Even if they didn't they still illustrate the same criticism levelled at some human labourers... "Jack of all trades, Master of None!"

Still as I said earlier, I'm delighted you all like your all singing all dancing phones and I don't want to see you loose them. I just want a decent PHONE for those of us who don't want all that stuff.

PS here's a good one for you! A recent article said that the mapping Apps on a mobile were better than some Sat navs now. Went as far as to suggest you'd be better buying an app for your phone instead. BUT using a phone whilst driving is illegal.......... discuss

Using a phone while driving is not in itself illegal.

Driving while distracted *is* illegal in most civilised countries. Using a phone (for a call or texting) is merely one of the most prominent methods of distraction. Adjusting a satnav or radio without paying attention to the road is just as bad.
