Basic track construction

Post by Daffer »

I am trying to recreate the line from Exeter St Davids to Exeter central and on to Exmouth junction along with 72B etc. I have the Just Trains download of the Bristol to Exeter line. To continue from the spur provided to Exeter Central, and using GPS to get the right location, I have to construct a curving rail through a tunnel and a 1 in 38 gradient. I do not know how to do this and get at least approximately close to reality.

Could some kind gent, or lady, point me in the right direction.

As a basic technique, I would suggest cutting the ground away and laying the track on or above the surface first. Then you can add the tunnel bore on top, reset the ground using a DEM and reshape it as required.

You might also want to practice basic tracklaying in a separate, blank route before trying to extend an existing one.

Finally, do all your editing in a clone of the original route, rather than editing the original. This avoids having your work wiped out whenever an update arrives or a verify is required. Also, take backups.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.
