Transfer scenarios between computers

Post by bickley »

Forgive me if this has been asked before but I cannot find a thread. I want to transfer some scenarios from my desktop to my laptop. I can see they are in 'Content' in the Railworks folder but are just a series of numbers with no description to identify them. Is there a way of identifying them so transfer can be effected easily or is it trial and error!!

Use the packager to make a .rwp file.

If you download RW_Tools from the file library, it has an option to display a list of all routes and scenarios along with their correct names as well as the coded names.

Hi Mike
Is there a possibility to add a function in RW-Tools to move Routes and/or Scenarios (one or more) from the standart Routes Folder to an other folder, may be at an other HD.

This is starting to get a little ridiculous! Any version of Windows has all the tools you need to this, with RW_Tools providing one way to find out which folder name corresponds to each route or scenario. I would suggest that basic file manipulation like this is something that should be mastered before moving onto RW_Tools.

As stated in the second post, the Packager included in the RW2 launcher is exactly what you need. You don't need any extra payware for this and it is really simple. Just tick the routes/scenarios/assets you want (it does display proper names), flick them over to the right hand side and hit the create package button. Then installation on the other computer is as simple as dragging that package into the package manager.

If you haven't got RW_Tools, the long laborious way is to use Windows Explorer to navigate to each scenario folder, look for the ScenarioProperties.xml and double click it. Internet Explorer should open and you can just read the information.
If there's no .xml file, use serz.exe to convert it.
(copy serz.exe from the main RW directory, either into the scenario folder or a seperate folder of your choice. Just drag'n drop the .bin file onto serz and wait a moment whilst it works---don't forget to delete any un-needed files as you go along)

As trainsadelaide has said, an awful lot can be accomplished by using the simple file and folder management tools Microsoft built into the operating system though RW_Tools does make the job easier!

If you haven't got RW_Tools surely the way to do it is to use the packager built in to RW2 as more than one reply has suggested? For operations such as moving routes and scenarios I don't see the need for using Windows Explorer, serz.exe or RW_Tools for that matter, RSC gave us the tool to do those jobs in the core product - or have I missed the point somewhere?

I think some people are getting mixed messages here when quite simply, all the guy wants to do is package scenarios to move to another system. RW can do that well enough on its own without the need for any RW_Tools, Serz, viewing XML files or whatever else has been mentioned.

If the misunderstanding has come from people trying to help identify scenarios in relation to their folder code then once again, no dramatic action is necessary, no need for RW_Tools, Serz, viewing XML files or anything else. The Package Manager can do this for you as well by just selecting your scenario, moving it to the right window and opening the tree, you can then match the code to the scenario name.

Or is everyone on commission?

No, I did...I wasn't aware that the packager displayed 'English' names rather than just a numerical code, you live and learn!!

The packager is a great tool for this purpose. You get a back=up of your scenario's for free if you do so... While doing, you may consider publishing your scenario's at UKTS. Just make sure they work properly and you need to add some documentation on required rolling stock.

Is that a hint to get me to join in with the scenario challenge??

Hi, I will not have a backupsystem, I have 223 Routes in my Route folder. My idea was to have the following:
Two Folders: Routes und Routes_I_will_not_see_now.
Then I will click on a Button move routes. Then I select with the mouse one or more Routesnames and move them (the Route folder) in in the other Folder.
The same procedure as I can do in the Explorer. But there I see only aweful Numbers which I have to indentify by RW-Tools and I have to search in an unsorted window.
Thats all.

You can take a shortcut and print off a list of all routes and scenarios with RW_Tools which will show the route folder names. From there it is just regular file manipulation that would be at least as easily done using an explorer window as it would with a third-party tool, but with the added bonus of being in full control and not having to place trust in a third-party tool.

You could also use the Packager to make a package of each route that could be installed/uninstalled at will.

Sorry I did not mean to start a hare running and am now in danger of becoming more confused (easily done in my case!!).

Thanks for all your help; it does not look like too much of a problem.
