Frame Rate Issues. New Routes

Post by jkk454 »

I recently purchased the glasgow to endiburgh route. And its very laggy, unplayably laggy.

These are the offical requirments, and the product is designed 'to run on a wide range of desktop pc's' (my .)
Operating System: Windows XP / Vista/ 7
CPU: 1.7 GHz or faster
RAM: 512 MB RAM
Video Card: 64 MB with Pixel Shader 2.0* (AGP PCIe only)
DirectX: Version 9.0c (Included)
Hard Drive Space: 6 GB of free space
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c compatible

My Pc Spec:

CPU 2.3 GHz AMD Athlon Daul core 4450e
RAM: 3GB
Video Card: 1GB HD4870 (GDDR5, DX10, Pixel Shader 4.0 etc..)
DirectX: Version 10
Sound Card: Relteak High Def 7.1Audio (Built into the mobo)

I have also been experiencing similar problems of lag on the newly purchased Exeter To Bristol route. Again the requirments are the same, but i far superceed them

Can anybody help? PLEASE!

P.S I have norton in silent mode, have 'railworks process' set to high on task manager

I also have the armstrong powerhouse lighting enchament pack

Can Anybody help? PLEASE!

That *should* work - especially for E-G which is very efficiently designed. There are a couple of things to check though:

1) AMD's power management can be confused by a combination of Windows' stupid CPU scheduler (though the Win7 one seems to be better) and a single-threaded application. The result is that the clock speed is reduced more often than it should be. To avoid this, set your Power Options to the "Maximum Performance" profile.

2) The Athlon II has a relatively small L2 cache, and the clock speed indicates that it isn't a high-end model. Upgrading to a faster model - such as a Phenom II for the same socket - will likely improve matters. Railworks is currently very demanding of CPU performance.

3) Your graphics card is plenty adequate. However, please check your 3D settings to make sure you haven't done anything too silly with them. In particular, make sure that the antialiasing mode is set to multisample, and not to adaptive or supersample. Adaptive is a good thing to have in just about any *other* game, but it causes glitches in Railworks. It is also probably sensible to limit to 4x antialiasing.

4) If none of the above help, or until you want to upgrade the CPU, try turning down graphics settings. The first things to turn off are Procedural Flora and High Detail Shadows.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.

Ok thanks for the info

1)The processer i have is NOT athlon ii its the first one ( hence the 4450e refrence number)

2)The socket i have is AM2+ meaning that i CANT upgrade to phenom ii, phenom 9550e is the max (Which is the smallest bit better than the Athlon i have)

3) Whats multisampling, the options i have for antialasing in Catalyst Control Centre are 2x, 4x and 8x. And a filter option (Box, narrow tent, and wide tent) (Would this improve performance)

4) I have adaptive anti aliasing turned off (as requested)

5) There are also options for 'mipmap detail level, and 'vertical refresh' would changing these have any effect

Ah, I forgot about the post-939 Athlon 64s. That is probably the source of most of your trouble (I had similar trouble with an Opteron 185), so tweaking the power management settings and detail level is probably the best you can do for now.

Don't worry too much about the 3D settings, as your video card far outstrips the CPU as far as Railworks is concerned. If you can, force Vsync on as that might smooth things out slightly, but don't expect it to work magic.

How do i tweak power settings for the cpu itself. Does it have a control panel in its own right.

Or do you do it from the windows power settings in control panel.

Also would it be possible for you to recommend the best detail settings on railworks, to get a smooth-ish (or above 25) frame rate.

A couple of other tips that might help to improve performance in RailWorks:

* Before launching RailWorks, close or disable other running programs (such as anti-virus, messengers, etc.. But of course re-enable your anti-virus again after closing RailWorks).

* Have your hard-drive(s) defragged. (I do mine about once a month).

* Before starting RailWorks, you might try running a utility such as Game Booster: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5952 , which can quickly and easily close background running Windows processes & services that probably won't be required while running RailWorks.
