What am I missing?

Post by Chock »

Hi, all. I've been trying to create a route in Railworks 2, read the manual and searched numerous sites but can't seem to solve the problem I am having, yup, you guessed it, terrain data not coming in.

To summarise where I am up to: I've created a route based on coordinates from Google Earth using the decimal preference, opened that up to edit it and checked on the compass marker up top to ensure I'm in the right location, downloaded some hgt data from here: http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/SRTM3/Eurasia/ and placed it in the folder C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\DEM\SRTM, which should mean I am good to go as far as I am aware, so I then select the correct object placement icon in the tools, then press the letter T and nothing happens at all, well apart from the fact that the RW editor crashed once, but generally speaking nothing happens.

The Railworks wiki and the manual are both about as useful as a chocolate teapot when it comes to solving the issue, and I know from the vast amount of searching around the net that I've done that there are things to check such as the latitude being reversed etc, and I've tried all that stuff, tried changing formats in Microdem all kinds of stuff, but to no avail, so what am I missing? This is really annoying, thus any help would be appreciated.

If you tell us the start co-ordinates of your route and the .hgt files you have, someone will help.

The first thing I'd check is you've got long and lat the right way round. Terrain may be generated but not where you are. A mistake many of us have made.

Check your latitude and longitude again - either Google Earth is wrong, or you are. The .hgt you need for Hazel Grove is N53W003, which you have.

Hi Al, it appears your lat and long have been transposed

Yup, but this is the problem, what I originally had was this:

And when that didn't work, I got rw_tools and had that set it all up as a template (typing in the lat and long correctly), it was rw-tools which transposed the lat and long coordinates. Now of course I'd read that was often one of the problems, so I thought it had done that because of some glitch on RW which made it necessary to do so, but neither way is working, I can key in any coordinate I like and it never alters the terrain height at all when I press T (and I do have the supposedly correct tool selected). Ironically, this is near the PEAK DISTRICT of all places, so it should certainly not be looking as flat as the Norfolk broads. I've been at this for three days now, and it's getting to the point where I'm going to give up and just use Trainz 2012 instead, since although it doesn't look quite as good, at least it actually works. So if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

EDIT: well, I don't know why, but it has suddenly started working, I just created the route manually and keyed in the coordinates for it correctly (as I had in fact been doing for days), but this time it worked. Still a mystery to me why it wasn't doing so before, but there you go, that's computers for you I guess. Anyway, I appreciate you all chipping in to offer help and suggestions. Thanks.

Just to prove it really does work, for anyone who was getting as exasperated as I was, here's a pic:

Thanks again for the help people, still a bit of a mystery why it wasn't working before, but I'll settle for the fact that it is doing LOL

Nothing has been deleted and given I interrupted watching my DVD to approve your post edit several posts above this one I find it quite offensive to be accused of being over zealous when I took time out of my evening to approve several of your posts.

When you joined the forum it was in the email that your first few posts will need approval. That also includes when you edit a previously approved post - it needs re-approving and the original post will appear to have been deleted until it is re-approved. If you care to look you will see that it is back there now.

There are no other moderators online right now so any further posts will need to wait for approval since I am going to go sit in the garden for an hour and have a read of my book instead of keeping an eye on the posts waiting for approval.
Kindest regards

Okay, now that's up and running, here's another question. After a big search around the cab ride DVDs in the Ian Allen Bookshop in Manchester, I bought one from some company called 225 Studios: CTL 07 - Liverpool Lime Street - Manchester - Sheffield - Nottingham. Does anyone know of any other decent decent resources for the line down Hazel Grove to Manchester. I have Railway Track Diagrams Volume 4 (Midlands and North West), so I'm good as far as actual track layout goes, but I could probably do with some info to help with what signalling there is on the line. I do have a book on UK signalling, but I'd help to know exactly what type of signals are actually specifically on that route.

Also, what's with this 'your post needs to be approved' malarkey? Is that one of those 'you have to have a certain number of posts' types of affairs to prevent spammers? If it is, I did actually cough up for a subscription to the site (which is how I got that terrain data from the DL library), so I would have thought such safeguards would be overridden if it was a subscriber that was posting. Just curious more than anything.

Premium membership has nothing to do with forum access. Premium access gets you faster downloading and no sitting in the download queue. See the last paragraph of http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 68&t=50831 for more details. Please note I am not suggesting you are about to be banned or anything but that is where it is documented.

New members have all their posts vetted until the moderators are happy the new member understands the forum rules and how things are done. There is no set number of posts before this is lifted and no time limit either so if you join and make 2 or 3 posts then disappear for a year you will still be in the moderator approval state. There is no post count that triggers the process to prevent people posting "me too" on numerous posts etc. Usually between 5 - 30 posts are sufficient but some have made it well past 200.

Also note that all members are subject to a filter that sends certain key phrases for moderator checking. See http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 6&t=114893 for some more details on that - even moderators and the site owner have their posts checked by this process.
Kindest regards

Gotcha, thanks for the expanded explanation. I'm certainly not complaining abut it, I was just curious what the criteria were more than anything. I write reviews for another sim site, so I can well understand the need to watch out for dodgy posts and I appreciate that moderating is often a somewhat thankless task, which is in fact why I tend to throw some money the way of any sites I join.
