I wouldn't feel too bad about it - at least two of the new build kettles currently being worked on have all of those iconic features.alexnick wrote:I don't think much of this new steam engine though. It doesn't have a taper boiler, belpair (sic) firebox, or a copper-cap chimney. Nor is it Brunswick Green.AN

Re: LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman: The return
According to rumor this has been postponed until December, doubtless this will either be confirmed or denied soon.kieranhardy wrote:But she was supposed to be going to Germany this month.
And I don't care what anybody else says, I'll always believe that 4472 is worthy of restoration despite the expense - and yes, I donated to the overhaul so I've put my money where my mouth is
For the record, Scotsman was repainted apple green when rebuilt as an A3, returning to traffic in January 1947. She retained apple green with BRITISH RAILWAYS markings until December 1949, when she was repainted BR blue. She was renumbered E103 in March 1948 and 60103 in December 1948. AFAIK no A3s retained wartime black into BR days.lateagain wrote:Not sure when it lost the black but early BR markings were just the words BRITISH RAILWAYS in white on the black tender so many must have lasted in wartime black well after 1945?

Re: LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman: The return
Very little chance of that unfortunately, at least not while it has the double Kylchap exhaust fitted. The smoke deflectors have been proved as necessary to lift the smoke and stop it from obscuring the drivers forward vision.

Re: LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman: The return
Now the B12 wont be ready for the NNR September gala.
No doubt the constant delays to Flying Scotsman have been the cause of this.

I didn't actually say 4472 wasn't worthy of restoration... i was stating that 4472 has been so expensive and slow which is holding up the return of the last inside cylinder 4-6-0 which as i said, is far more unique than the 4-6-2, 4472 may be the last of its kind but wasn't it often said an A4 is just like an A3 but with streamlining? Yes, 4472 is a nice locomotive but there is always so much hype about it that it becomes boring very quickly. Just like 60163 'Tornado'...MuzTrem wrote:And I don't care what anybody else says, I'll always believe that 4472 is worthy of restoration despite the expense - and yes, I donated to the overhaul so I've put my money where my mouth is

Re: LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman: The return
8572 might be the last insider cylindered 4-6-0 in Britain, but not the world - I believe that at least one of the beautiful Portuguese 5'6" gauge Henschels survives. 4472 and 8572 are both beautiful engines, both worthy of restoration and I'm looking forward to seeing both in steam together, but do you really need to have this strop against Scotsman just because your personal favourite has been delayed? Yes, 4472's restoration has been expensive and slow, but it's also attracted huge interest - not to mention donations - from the general public, not just enthusiasts. Hence, the NRM are under a lot of pressure to get the job done.kieranhardy wrote:I didn't actually say 4472 wasn't worthy of restoration... i was stating that 4472 has been so expensive and slow which is holding up the return of the last inside cylinder 4-6-0 which as i said, is far more unique than the 4-6-2
Remember, the NNR pioneers had to wait more than thirty years for 8572s return - so I'm sure you can wait a few more months!

Not a strop, just my opinion. And neither are a personal favourite of mine anyway, i rate the J15 & N7 more than both of themMuzTrem wrote: but do you really need to have this strop against Scotsman just because your personal favourite has been delayed?

You are joking right? You don't cut up 'the most famous locomotive of all times'. (Almost) everybody knows Flying Scotsman. I would be careful cutting up ANY steamloco still around at this time and age. But anyway FS indeed looks smart in wartime black and w/o the German type smoke deflectorsoldrocker wrote:Let's just cut the thing up and be done !

Interesting that.black8 wrote: (Almost) everybody knows Flying Scotsman.
Many of the non cognoscenti refer to The Flying Scotsman, the train instead of Flying Scotsman the loco.
There's an article in the latest copy of The Blackcountryman (the journal of the Black Country Society) about train spotting in The Black Country and, although it's at work and I can't quote exactly, there are about three photographs illustrating the article one of which is Flying Scotsman on a 1960s rail tour through Wolverhampton!
That's what I object to. The all pervading FS as some sort of Holy Grail of Steam!
Cut it up and melt down the bits to provide materials for the Grange or County !
(you'll have noticed that I'm not an LNER man! Far from it!)
Re: LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman: The return
Just caught up on the BBC piece at the link. Strikes me as odd that having had the loco in almost as many pieces as they could get it during the overhaul that the cracks weren't found until a few weeks ago. Also having found them why go to the time and expense of finishing off the job when some of it will surely have to be undone to fix the cracks?dorlan wrote:Flying Scotsman's return delayed by cracks!TheAmateurBasher wrote:You either love or hate her, but the iconic LNER A3 4-6-2 Pacific 4472 Flying Scotsman is back, after it's rather lengthy and expensive overhaul.<snip>
