Has anyone succ.fully played "Short Haul" from the Hall DLC?

Post by USRailFan »

Have now tried three times the scenario "Short Haul" from the GWR Hall DLC, but everytime I get a 'derailment due to junction set against train' when about to enter the mainline to reverse into Templecombe upper. Has anyone been able to complete this at all with the latest version of RW??

Works fine here, are you sure the points are set correctly to enter the mainline, they should be by default, if not, try changing them yourself with the G key.

I must say this scenario confused me at first, would have been easier to start at Templecombe Upper, though I imagine it's supposed to recreate a through service.

Even more strange about the number of static AI services though :o

The points in question are, as far as I can see, not able to be set manually (I am talking about at the very start, coming from the short single-track stub from Templecombe lower and then about to enter the double-track part of the main in order to back down to Templecompe upper).

Well that's strange. There's a red signal before that junction which you TAB past, I take it you've done that?

Yes. I guess it may have been caused by me being a bit hard on the throttle when starting (the Hall seems to be very prone to wheelslip?)... I noticed the 'projected arrival time' in the F4 HUD going wild as well...

Hmm. I believe it's a case of gradually applying enough throttle to get her moving once the brakes are fully released, according to the way RW teaches you, it's full reverser, brakes fully released, set the brakes back to Running, apply power gradually until you reach 10mph, then wind back the reverser to about 15. If the locomotive starts to decelerate, slowly apply more power.

And, of course, blow the whistle occasionally.

Well, tried the scenario again, making sure I did not get any wheelslip when starting, and got exactly the same thing - projected arrival timer to Templecombe Upper running wild, and a 'derailment due to junction switched against train' when entering the main. So can anyone that are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN they have the latest version of Railworks 2 try this scenario and see what happens?

I have just run this scenario using a copy that does have automatic updates enabled in Steam. No problems, the scenario worked first time. Make sure that before you enter the mainline at the junction that the signal is at proceed and the points in the correct position, otherwise you will derail by attempting to trail mainline points. If you have to tab past it make sure it actually changes before proceeding.

then wind back the reverser to about 15.
you would only want to put the reverser back to 15% if you were doing around 60 to 70 mph  i tend to put the reverser back to around 45% to 50% when i reach 10MPH and as speed builds up i slowly reduce the reverser setting until im at line speed.

OK, fifth try - and exactly the same result!!!! Sorry, but I simply just fail to see what I can be doing wrong if others really are completing this successfully...

I had this problem when I first tried the scenario sometime back.

It still happens now if I 'power' up the hill to the junction.
I think this little bit was put in to make it vaguely 'interesting' as the rest of the run is a straight 'move onto next station and stop' type.

I suggest you move slowly away to begin, or push speed-wise and make sure you stop at the signal. When I've seen the signal actually change, I've not encountered the problem again. Just tried it now to prove the point and it does work, honest! :)

OK, so what speed would you recommend when starting and heading toward the junction?

Less than 10mph if you want the junction to have been changed before you reach the signal, or get upto 30 as soon as possible, then you will reach the signal at 'red', stop and see it change, confirming that the points are in your favour...
