Clarification on bogie construction/naming, please

Fire up your 3D modelling tool and start building some rolling stock, or find out what others are previewing here. If you have questions about how to make the blueprints work or what names mean what in models, here's the place to find out your answers.

Clarification on bogie construction/naming, please

Post by dogmouse »

Hello,

Im a little confused about naming conventions in regard to multiple objects representing a bogie.

This is the example image used in the RS docs. of a bogie.
Image

If I build one like this in Max, am I supposed to attach all the objects together as a single object, and then call it something like 1_0128_bo01?
Or do I leave it as a bunch of separate, individually named objects that are then grouped together or linked to the main bogie frame, and then named as above?

Can someone clarify this for me, please?

Additionally, if it is to remain as multiple objects, could you give me an example of how you would name a few of those objects?

I have been reading the docs extensively, and I fully understand the naming convention recommendations, but the tutorials use a single box for a truck, and they dont specify how I am supposed to handle a multi-object truck assembly.

Thanks,
Rich

I don't use Max (3DC for me), but there needs to be 3 objects for each bogie (assuming that you have 2 wheelsets per bogie):

Bo01 - The FRONT bogie
- Bo01Wh01 - The FRONT wheel of the front bogie - needs to be a child of the bogie
- Bo01Wh02 - Second wheel - also a child
Bo01 - The rear bogie
- Bo02Wh01 - The FRONT wheel of the rear bogie - needs to be a child of the bogie
- Bo02Wh02 - Second wheel - also a child

I'm not sure how you set this up in MAx, someone else might know better.

thanks,

Thanks chaddockdk,

Yes, I am aware of the minimal requirements for naming bogie parts.

Anyone else?

You do indeed need to attach it all into one object and name it "X_XXX_bo0X" (replacing the X with numbers, obviously). also any shadow model for the bogey must also be parented to the top LOD of the bogey model (1_XXXX_bo0X is the top LOD).

Hope that helps :).

Thank you, David.

I will try that.

While I still have you on the phone, could you tell me if I am really limited to only one 512x512 texture to be used for the bogie.

The docs say that, but is that true?

Kind Regards,
Rich

That's not true, it's what's recommended. I am aware you can use any texture size (within a suitable amount) that's in a size of a power of 2 (2048x2048 etc) but it isn't limited, take Dave Brindley's 86 into account, he used 1024x1024 sized textures for his bogies.

Hope that helps again :D.
