Hi, I'm having problems with some of the activities of the S & D.
The 1st is" 9.45 B'mouth to Bath PE W/day" The 9F does not have any coal or water in the tender. I've had this problem before on another route but unfortunately I've forgotten the answer. Short term memory loss!
The 2nd concerns "Coal to Templecombe"-I can't get the 7F to couple up to the brakevan. When I attempt to the van runs away and then derails.Any help would be appreciated please.

Hi Doug, I've had a look at those threads and I've fixed the 1st problem ok but I couldn't find anything on the coupling problem.I did notice on Conbuilder the 7F tender is AB but the brakevan is CC. So I'm still asking for help.

Are the coach's couplings compatible with the 9F? Use Route Riter to check that they are all either automatic or chain - a mixture of the two won't work. You can also do this manually by checking the eng and wag files and editing if necessary.

To try to fix it yourself.
In Trains/Trainset make a copy/backup of the 'Bath_BR_9F' folder.
Open the 'Bath_BR_9F' folder

Locate and open the file 'BR_9F_92203_Tender_1G.WAG'

Look for this part of the file.

Save the changes.



There is a school of thought that advises stadardising on couplings for your MSTS. I.E. Every new install is changed to the same Type.

Although you have Con-Builder.
So select the Tender that is AB
On the Con-Builder menu Bar, left Click EDIT/Edit this Unit. The box shows the details of the tender couplings Front (BAR) and Rear (AUTOMATIC) click the dropdown arrow and chose Chain this will re-write the .wag file for the Tender when you click OK..

While you are at it do the Loco using the same procedure but be sure to change the Front coupling.

Any thing you are not sure of always ask here.

Hi Doug, Sorry to be such a pain, I've read your thread, just one problem there isn't a tender wag file for the S&D 7f. I did the conbuilder way, changed the tender ok but I couldn't changed the loco. I get an error message when I click on the loco saying "mismatch"The problem is the tender is the wrong way round! I know you can change stock around but I've forgotten how and I couldn't find anywhere on conbuilder to change it. By the way I have managed to couple up to the brakevan. Thanks for that.

Hi Harold,
No worries enough have helped me.

There is no need to have a consist in the Con-Builder window to change the couplings just highlight (click once) on the item in either list. Then use the Edit/Edit this unit button.

See the 'EYE' button with the arrow. Click that to be able to choose which stock is displayed. This will make finding stock easier.
All tenders are named ending in "T". E.G. DR_BR_7F_53806T.wag Some use a standard tender to save file space and are not always obvious.
You can use the 'Consists making part of activities' menu button (looks like a steering wheel) to load the consist that has the stock item, with the coupling that needs to be changed, to the Con_Builder window. Then read the name from the consist icon to find it in the lists.

To turn a stock item round in a Consist. Right click on it so an arrow appears above the icon. This should not be necessary with consists for activities as they are when they were created. Unless the model was built the wrong way round it should orientate correctly.

Remember that the Coupling statements in the xxxx.eng/xxxx.wag files are reversed.
E.G. the first one you see is the rear one. So for a tender loco the Loco Coupling statement is Bar...........Chain and the Tender Coupling statement is Chain............Bar.

This is not how the 'Edit/Edit this unit' button display is. That is correct, the top one is Front the bottom is Rear. As it says.

This has rambled a bit in trying to give all relevant info I hope you follow it.

EDIT:- I have looked at the S&D 7Fs and they all display the correct way round.

Hi Doug,I've managed to get everything to work ok now but if I try to create a consist with the 7F running in reverse when you put the tender its facing forward, click on to reverse it, then add the 7Floco you get a message saying mismatch. Anyway the activity worked ok but its hard work get up the hill to Maesbury Summit. From Midsomer Norton its sanders on all the way to the summit. Boiler pressure was great, no worries there.I really enjoy this route. Its a pity we can't merge routes in MSTS. just adding Bath to B'ham to it and up thro' to Ambergate on the B&D, then the Peak Line to M'chester Central. Wouldn't that be great! Anyway Doug thanks for all your help. Know doubt I'll be on here again with some problem to be solved.Thanks again.

Hi Harold,
I am pleased to have been of help and thank you for bothering to say thank you (so many don't).
As we discussed the coupling statements can be confusing. Reversing stock should be OK as long as the front/rear and tender/loco couplings are set properly. I have not been able to produce the 'MisMatch' message I do get 'Incompatable Coupling' though. It might be a version of Con-Builder issue but means the same..

As an experiment make a consist placing a loco first then reverse it. Find the required Tender.
Left click on the loco icon in the consist window, it will change colour, now place the tender.
Save with a unique name. Start MSTS using the train.exe (not Train Store) to see if the tender has orientated correctly. A variation of this method should provide a 'rule set' for you.
Not using Train Store to start MSTS keeps the new consist available. As soon as you run MSTS through Train Store (as you really should do) it stores the unused consist.

Come back as many times as you like. If you just want to say something/anything that does not fit the Sub-Forums, use the Open Forum. For a laugh read Funny? I thought So!

Hi Harold,
If it was heavy train it might either have been banked from Midsomer Norton or Piloted from Evercreech Junc to Bath, some trains were banked at the rear as far as Bineger from Evercreech Junc,the banker then ran light loco back to Evercreech Junc.

So you might have to add either a Banker or Pilot loco to your train.unless you want give your fireman a hard time

Hi Harold, just to add to what has already been posted, the way I think you want your new consist layout to be is as follows:- Tender/Train/Coaches or wagons as against Train/Tender/Coaches or wagons.
So long as the front coupling the train is the same as the rear coupling of the tender you should have no bother.
In say Consist Editor select the Consist you want to alter and create a Template of it and rename it xxxxx_rev.con, then scroll to the front of the consist and delete the tender by dragging the shape on to correct icon, then right click on the Loco to reverse it's direction.
Now select the tender and put it in front of the Train and then right click on it to change it's direction and so you should now have the Tender then Train facing backwards followed by the normal consist.
Just save this new Consist and it will be available for use under it's new name.

Hi Doug, I'm what Terry Wogan would call an "old geezer" and I would never ask for help without thanking people at the end.I shall have to study what you just said and inwardly digest it.As far as climbing up the bank to Maesbury, I had no problem with steam, it was the loco keeping her feet.I've got quite a lot of books on the S&D notably Ivo Peters Albums.Freight trains were usually banked from Radstock up to Maesbury.Also if they were collecting from Midsomer Norton, the banker held the train on the mainline while front loco went to the colliery for more wagons and then reversed back down onto the mainline.Thanks to Michael and Bob for your comments.

I also dragged the Templecome Coal up the bank OK. Did need sanding all the way though!

Your added info on the use of a Banker Loco should help in making authentic activities.

You touched on merging routes and rightly say it is not feasible (without a lot of work).
Activities can be (and have been) written 'bridging' route boundaries.
For instance there are thee activities "Euston_To_Holyhead" spanning 3 MSTS Routes

Hi Doug and Michael, Well that didn't take long. I've got another problem. To try make the 2Ps sound more authentic I changed the sound file on each 2P using the 2 Cylinder Sound Set V1.1.Now the problem only to seem to affect the "Bath to B'mouth Slow" which of course uses a 2P.When I load the activity thru' Train Store I get an error message "cant find file..\..\common.sound\2cyl_generic\2c-100a-eng01.sms" Now as far as I know this file doesn't exist.I've tried other acts and it doesn't affect them. I been thru each eng. file checking several times and I can't find anything wrong.I could go back and put the default sounds but I don't really want to do that if I can help it. Any clues.

You do have, in the Trainset Folder, a 'common.sound' Folder, with the '2cyl_generic' Folder in that and the '2c-100a-eng01.sms' file in that?

You have changed the sound in the right 2P loco? (The one used in the consist)

You have used the correct format in the Sound line?
It should read like this.

Yes there are two!

Have a look at those first and come back.
