Class 221 Formations Query

Post by rufuskins »

I have treated my 222 sets based on the best available information that I have gleaned.

My next query concerns the Class 221s. My understanding is that they run as 5 car sets, but I have seen reference to a 2 car set (221144) and a 4 car set (221141).

Again I would be grateful for any confirmation or otherwise of the latter?

The platform 5 2009 DMU pocket book lists 221 141/142/143/144 as all being 4 car. It also suggests only 141 is with XC and the remaining 3 are all at VT. However this was published over a year ago. I think one of the reasons was fire damage to centre cars, one at Drem near Edinburgh and another at Starcross near Dawlish/Exeter.

However in Decembers Modern Railways (pg 87) it says Virgin Trains are to disband 221144 and put the two centre cars into units 142/143 to create 2 x 5 coach sets leaving to driving motors spare.

Thanks for the reply, and I will leave my trainsets as 5 car sets.
