If the assets are freeware there remains the enormous problem of locating them since there is a wide selection of sites which may host them.
At present the only external freeware I'm using in my Oxted line is the superb Lanky track (the flat bottom and bullhead 03 version). I know these are hosted here so it's relatively easy to put a file association with them.

We have discussed this before and it seems unlike MSTS where everything had to be included in the route folder, there's a bit of reluctance to bundling third party items in a Railworks route pack even when permission is freely given. I'm not sure why this is though I suspect there's trepidation over accidentally zipping up some payware items, also a couple of us recently noticed issues with the packager where it wasn't gathering the required texture files for an object automatically. This even applied when taking an item from one of my own previous routes which was in a separate folder. If you've created the model yourself, then you probably have an idea what textures need to be included with it but one made by someone else no clue at all. Ergo, it's easier to just say, "Look here and download it yourself".

Going forward there was talk a while back of community scenery "packs" which would at least put several items in one place but this seemed to die a death?

I was looking for another route to add to my collection and was not that interested in slow Island lines either but I followed the advise in the UKTS threads to get this route for the free DLC if nothing else. The route is very well done and looks very good and I am glad I bought it now. Having completed all the supplied scenarios of which there are quite a few supplied (and this should be taken into account as well as the quality rolling stock and assets that also come with it.) I found that I thoroughly enjoyed every one, the change in pace and scenery was very welcoming and its just something a bit different in case you get bored of driving HST's all night.

I bought mine from Just Trains direct rather than from Steam because they have a IOW pack with the Class 66 bundled with it, so if you are thinking you would like the Class 66 in your collection then you should definatley look into this pack. (Its the same Class 66 that Steam are selling) This pack is currently on sale at Just Trains now £24.99 down to £19.99. You also get 150 award points which I think is worth £1.50 off your next purchase. So buy the pack and you get the Class 66 for essentially nothing, a quality new route and the option of being able to install even more quality routes from the UKTS library. Acquire the Class 66 soundpack from Armstrong Powerhouse with the money you have saved and your all set.

IOW + Class 66 + AP Class 66 Soundpack costs £25 you get:

High quality route.
Class 483 rolling stock.
0-4-0 Kitchener steam loco with matching passanger carriage.
Class 66 with 8 liveries (including the very good Frieghtliner livery supplied with the sound pack)
25 scenario's.

Well, part of! Currently got scenery placed on 4km (out of 30...) progress will slow a bit the rest of this week due to my shift pattern but hopefully pick it up again next week.

There is also the large selection of re-skins for Invincible and dozens or re-skinned characters by M1ckran in the UKTS library ...
