Driving Stream Train

Post by orangzeb »

Hi, as I reached the new Scenario (2nd One in Railworks 2 if you play by scenario) the first scenario in that list says Hard it's (a day of two valves) I guess, where you have to pickup passengers from two different stations by the time limits, I can do ok with the first station, but no matter how hard I try I can't reach the second one at time without over limiting the speed limits, Tried it 4 times, but still no luck so far, I read the manual on how to drive a stream train, but it does not describe what small ejector and cylinder ejector do? I'm also having trouble stopping the train, and also having trouble maintaining the speed at a specific limit...

when I apply brakes, speed goes down, when I self lap breaks then still speed increases, I'm so far sick of this stream train.. Please help.

Thanks....

Hi. To help re stopping a steam train, it is more difficult than a modern train. Due to the vacuum brake (rather than an air brake) there is a considerable lag between putting on the brake and it acting on the train. Similarly when you take the brake off it will continue to slow the train while the ejector recreates the vacuum to release the brakes. So when approaching a station one needs to gauge when to apply the brake earlier than with a diesel. As the brake begins to act and the train slows one needs to work out when to release it or put it to self lap. As the brake releases the train's speed will fall more slowly (it should not increase unless you have the regulator open or it is on a falling gradient). When you have the speed lower and the platform is approaching put the brake in again and the train should slow to a stop at the right place; often you need to release the brake as the train enters the platform so the continued application ( while the vacum is restored) slows the train to a stop.

Hope this helps but it does need quite a lot of practice and I undershoot /overshoot quite often.

No it is not too hard; you just have to anticipate the brake. I am not sure what scenario you are referring to as I was simply giving a generic view on steam train braking.
